My understanding was the Spiceheads free UEB was meant to be just that, free. It limits how many clients you can use for it though, whereas the real UEBs and appliances limit it to what storage you have, not by clients.

Well there's two version Spiceworks Free and FreeESXI. Spiceworks free is limited to 8 clients, FreeESXi has no stated client/storage limits that I've found.

The Real UEB and appliances can be licensed by clients or storage which ever makes the most sense for the customer.

I've heard lots of great things about Unitrends, although I've never used it. What virtualization technology are you running? VMWare/Hyper-V/Xen, etc.?

        Hyper-V

I would like to hear from @KatieUnitrends if there is a free solution I can recommend for the client. If not, what will they need?

When did that change? I thought it was always by storage, which is what kept me at bay - out of my pay range.

Not a bad option if they have less then 1TB of storage.

Not sure. They've offered both options for a while.

They have a couple physical servers, too.

As far back as I know of, it's been either/or. So, at least 2-3 years. I think they have not always been super effective in getting the word out about product details, so things get missed often.

Good, this solution will do that. It will backup any client you want as long as it is, total, less then 1TB.

@coliver and they made a big deal about that it is 1TB per customer, not just per MSP or whatever.

I meant client as in server/workload. Not as in customer. Although that is good to know that it is per customer.

I was actually looking at that today. As well as http://backupchain.com/Feature-Summary.html I haven't tried either though.

This isn't going to work for this environment though.

I am beyond confused with all this Unitrends talk. Can someone summarize what is going on? Are there now 3 versions of Unitrends free? Do any of these versions work on physical servers?

Basically this new Unitrends platform allows unlimited hypervisor based backups, up to 1TB of source data. It would work really well for moderate VMs without any application backup needs... other then that it has quite a few limitations. So for this instance with two physical servers... unless you could P2V them you wouldn't be able to back them up with UEB Free.

The Spiceworks UEB Edition will backup Virtual and Physical servers up to 8 devices total. And will do Agent Based backups or agentless. Not limit no the amount of data

The FreeESXi Version will backup both Virtual and Physical server, it's the version I'm using it does not backup at the VM Host level but will do agent backups. And I'm not aware of limits on the storage or number of devices. You could do agentless backups from another (licesned) host like ESXi or hyper-v but not on itself running on ESXI free I believe

The Unitrends Free only backups Agenetless so will only backup Hyper-V or ESXi VMs. and ESXi must be licensed with at least essentials.
