I got asked to evaluate a bunch of these products, tried it in a lab, on a couple of client sites, it was horrible. Bit weary of the "Spiceworks is FREE" fans. -

Unitrends, never used it personally so no comment.

Veeam is great for a virtual environment, if you have the licensing for it. However, for a mixed environment, I would say get the free UEB from Spiceworks to deploy for now, and as they grow, maybe look into getting an actual Unitrends appliance.

I've heard lots of great things about Unitrends, although I've never used it. What virtualization technology are you running? VMWare/Hyper-V/Xen, etc.?

The free 30-day trial UEB from Unitrends will protect virtual and physical, but the "Spicy UEB" (an offer made to those who are Spiceworks account holders), will only protect virtual, and only up to 8 sockets. Last I knew the generic "free UEB" was discontinued... back in October?

It's still here but, not really advertised you just use code "freeexi" I'm not sure if you are allowed to use it on anything but the free version of esxi or not (there are no clear terms posted) http://go.unitrends.com/unitrends-and-free-esxi

My ESXi is licensed and I use it without issue. Also, it will back up both physical and virtual machines with the free UEB.

But that does mean Unitrends really allows it to be used in that manner. @KatieUnitrends should know.

My understanding was the Spiceheads free UEB was meant to be just that, free. It limits how many clients you can use for it though, whereas the real UEBs and appliances limit it to what storage you have, not by clients.

Well there's two version Spiceworks Free and FreeESXI. Spiceworks free is limited to 8 clients, FreeESXi has no stated client/storage limits that I've found.
The Real UEB and appliances can be licensed by clients or storage which ever makes the most sense for the customer.

When did that change? I thought it was always by storage, which is what kept me at bay - out of my pay range.

As far back as I know of, it's been either/or. So, at least 2-3 years. I think they have not always been super effective in getting the word out about product details, so things get missed often.

Good, this solution will do that. It will backup any client you want as long as it is, total, less then 1TB.
