For After Effects specifically, people seem to recommend http://www.blender.org/ a lot, which is apparently primarily for 3D but can be done for correcting, compositions, and other stuff. Since After Effects is "pretty niche" it may not be as easy to replace, but also apparently a lot of "big shots" use:

for most of the things that After Effects does, from what I can find anyway, but I avoid design like the Black Death, I'm strictly a developer.

I tend to avoid using Adobe products when possible, for example I don't use Photoshop, I use Corel PhotoSuite.

The unfortunate thing is, if you do that kind of stuff professionally, you pretty much must use Photoshop and other Adobe products, they pretty much own the market.

@Dashrender From what I've seen that's more of an amateur / pro-amateur belief, sort of like how all through the 90s it was widely believed movies and such could only be made on Macs, when most studios were actually using SGI, this is still a common belief today and may actually be closer to true than it ever was. I do know that some films such as Shrek 3 were made on Linux and FOSS. I'm no expert on this, and absolutely could be wrong, but it seems as though the higher professionals use things like Motion, PowerAnimator, Maya, and whatever else. I think Adobe's gained a mythos about how far they can actually take you, though certainly, I'm sure, there are places in big studios which use Adobe software, it's just not as dominate as they'd want you to believe.

Wait, what?!? you mean that wasn't true? Yeah I knew that wasn't true. But Macs did own the medium/low end option in those days if for no other reason that people believe it to be true, so they bought into it.

I actually prefer that it is not available, makes for a clean break on the client side and makes it a dead issue on the server side - if you are using Flash, you are intentionally dropping customers. The technology is dead on mobile, it is dead on desktop. It still has a quirky place for very low end internal software development for use in-house but even there it would normally be exceedingly foolish.

I think that you can keep using Google Chrome, even when Adobe abandons a platform.
