well, he was mowing and caused the fire....
then he mowed about 15 ft in front to try to create a gap the fire might not jump... didn't work. -

He was mowing a corn field with a lawn tractor - and previously had removed the heat shield. The old corn stocks got hot and started on fire.
Wrong tool for the job, but like many farmers, just wings it often. lol

yep... it was duh moment... although.. I'm not sure it would have mattered.. the heatshield probably wouldn't stop this problem 100% of the time anyway. The mower was a lawn tractor.. not a garden tracker... not designed for this..
