Stands for, but is named after the peanut butter and has an official pronunciation that makes what it stands for irrelevant.

I thought it was named after jiffy, because gifs are smaller than jpgs and download faster.

Not exactly chicken and the egg, but, I think that GIFs came 1st

Q: Which came first -- the chicken... or the egg?
A: A circle has no beginning.

No, they've explicitly said that it is pronounced JIF because it is named after JIFF the peanut butter. The creator has stated such since the beginning.

That, also, is true

Hard G for me. If the inventer wanted it pronounced JIF he should have called it Jagged Image Format or something.
Not that it matters anymore as PNG can do everything GIF can, and can do it better too. No, not just some things, everything.

Well, I know Jif as a cleaning product. Not recommended for a sandwich.

I was joking...
Technically it should be a soft G as in gym.
I do know that acronyms are to be pronounced as a single word.
G is soft most commonly when preceding an i, e, or y, but it's not a rule.
So at this point is it up to the acronym creator to dictate acronym pronunciation? Or does the most common method, in this case, soft G, take prescience for all languages, in the created language, depend on language, etc?
