I actually like Utica quite a bit. @Dominica is from there so we are there all of the time. The outlying areas are pretty drab. But the city proper is quite nice. The brewery district is revitalized and really nice. There is an awesome prohibition era bar right downtown that we love. Lots of good food and if you need to stay in town hit up the Hotel Utica, it is great. Her mother works in downtown and her father works in downtown Rome (the other downtown in the area) so they know the area really well. I know much of Utica better than Rochester at this point even though I grew up with Rochester as my main city. Utica has the best train access to downtown of any upstate city. Take the train to Utica and you can walk to your hotel, restaurant and late night bars. Can't do that in Rochester.

Utica must have changed a lot since I was there last...granted, it's been quite a few years...I don't remember Utica having much like downtown Rochester...

From the train station (my personal pick for the best grand railroad station in the state) to the arena and south for a bit with the old hotels and banks is a very "city" feeling area. It's not large but it does have a real "urban" feel to it. Like people actually live in the city and do things there. Rochester feels like a mall (except the mall got torn down) in that it is shopping and a little bit of jobs but there is no housing downtown at all.

I actually really like Utica... mostly because the city-center is so small... I've been speaking with one my friends at Citi and have been considering sending a resume in.

Rome is nice. My father grew up in Rome originally and worked there for years! My brother even got shipped to Rome for school for years because of their special ed program. I like Rome. My father's main office is still in Griffiss Air Force Base.

Which Citi office is in Utica? I worked there for eight years and never knew we had a Utica office. I've been to their Rochester and Buffalo offices.

I should say Morgan Stanley \ Smith Barney. I'm fairly sure they were recently merged into the Citi label. At least that was the paperwork that I got from them.

Nevermind I had that backward... they aren't part of Citi anymore. Not for several years, sorry about that.

They have so many offices, hundreds that I have never heard of. But I am surprised that they had an IT division up there.

Ah okay, that makes more sense. I remember that having been divested.

I really enjoy the outside concerts in Utica. I have been to 2 of them during the summers. I am not sure if its a weekly thing or not, but its pretty fun. After I get bored of the band, we hit all the the bars downtown.

People do NOT like the Miami Dolphins there. I was wearing a Dolphins Jersey and hat. I took alot of crap from the locals 😛

No sports teams in the Utica area of any standing. Jets are NJ and far away. Bills are Buffalo, many cities away.

Right, but Buffalo would be considered the local team. I live about 2.5 hours from Miami, but you will find 90% of the people here are Fins fans because its closer than any other NFL team

But Miami isn't a rival city to you.

Buffalo is a different region of NY and Utica is equidistant between there and NJ. Utica is seriously not Bills country.

@scottalanmiller Scott, yes, the Giants and the Jets play in the Meadowlands, which is in NJ. But they are NY teams. Get over it.

You might not know NY counties like I do, but that is Cayuga County going to the Giants. Wayne County, the eastern Rochester suburbs, is the last Bills county in NY. That puts one entire major metro area between Utica and Bills country. The Bills are very much just a Buffalo/Rochester team. Buffalo and Rochester act much like a single dual binary metro (like the DFW) and don't really associated with the more distant cities like Syracuse even though technically Rochester and Syracuse are both in the Finger Lakes. Rochester and Buffalo are both on the great lakes and the Bills are in the suburbs on the Rochester side of Buffalo. Both associate with Canada, but Syracuse and Utica do not.

They are NJ teams, there is nothing to get over. Don't be petty just because you are from a region that has no team to call its own. You can't claim another state's teams just because you say so.

Scott, having grown up in that area, Giants and Bills are both equally loved, although people tend to be more vocal for the Giants, considering being a Bills fan is just painful. That map is a good guide, but not perfect.
