Shadowrun Returns.
Heard of it but never played.
Not a long one and a very different genre than you are used to. It is an old school isometric style but made this past year. Good writing and there is one expansion for it already that is supposed to be very good. I liked it quite a bit. Less than fifteen hours of gameplay in the main title, but it is a low cost game and has expansions.
It's a cyperpunk genre with magic. A bit odd, but a fun universe.
Cool.

What about Balder's Gate, Icewind Dale or Neverwinter Nights.
I'm going to second these recommendations Baldur's gate is the series that got me into gaming. It was recently re-released on Steam and Android (maybe iOS as well?) and can generally be found for almost nothing during Steam sales. GoG has Icewind Dale available and it seems to be working with Windows 8.

@coliver Really great games. Hoping to play BG again soon and haven't played ID but I think that I bought it already from GOG.
-
@scottalanmiller Yep I re-purchased BG original on Android and have played through a bit of it. Amazing how well that engine works with a touch interface.

I hadn't considered playing it on a tablet. Maybe I should.

@scottalanmiller I would recommend it. If for nothing else then it being a fairly novel experience.

Yes, good for having a good background in RPG gaming!

What about Fallout 3? I had it for the PS3 and all the DLC and it was amazing. One of the best storylines in the main game and all 4 dlc's. Fallout New Vegas was... ok.

I've heard about the Fallout series. Who are your enemies? I've heard their good, and I have I think New Vegas for 360, but haven't played it.

Oh... you haven't played Fallout 3/New Vegas? You're missing out think of it as a Elder Scrolls game set in post-apocalyptic 1950's US. The world is your enemy and the story line is fantastic. A lot of people didn't enjoy New Vegas as much (the main plot line was swiss cheese) but the side quests and additional fluff were great for a fan of the series.
-
Are you wanting an action RPG or a turn based one? If the former, Shadows of Mordor is great. If the latter, then Wasteland 2 is out now.

I was just about to mention the Fallout series!

Don't discount the older Elder Scrolls either. Morrowwind and Oblivion are great titles.
-
If you are okay spending a few dollars, consider a used PS2 and go back and play some of the classics from that era. That platform is one of the best RPG and adventure platforms ever.
-
I know you said RPG, but the Warcraft Series (Warcraft Orc & Humans up to Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne) have some of the best story telling of any RTS. May not be your genre but still worth a shot if you like a good story.

I like the feel of Dragon Age, which is kind of both. I LOVE turn-based games though, which makes me the opposite of @scottalanmiller .

I like turn based RPGs because it is about the story, not the action. I dislike turn based strategy because it makes it boring and drawn out.

I love turn-based period. That being said, as much as I like a lot of the new factors and features of Civ V, it moves SO much slower than Civ IV that it is almost unplayable by my standards, and that's saying something! I can take over half a dozen turns in Civ IV before one turn finishes processing in Civ V.

If you love turned based, check out Nethack.
