Proxmox in 2022

My initial impressions are to tell you to go with Proxmox.
I just switched to it from Vanilla KVM. The managment interface isn't terrible. As a whole, the system is easy enough to use once you figure out where things are at.

The vendor is pushing harder than ever to purchase the full VMWare suite and is clearly not taking NO for an answer. We finally got our point across.
And that vendor is still your vendor? Why?

For those of you using Proxmox now - what are your general impressions?
Quite happy and continuing to expand our footprint with it.

We would benefit from the backup appliance as well.
We are using that in several places now, too.

and all the VMs will be Linux. There is no domain. Hyper-V just does not make sense.
None of that really affects things one way or another. That Hyper-V is all but abandoned and isn't as good as KVM, matters.
-
@scottalanmiller Because it is government and they are the vendor we are approved to use because they had the best pricing and are under contract. We have another vendor we got pricing from as well and are under contract with. They finally agreed to drop the VMWare from the quotes.

That is another reason for a change. I don't want to deal with Hyper-V in Azure after 2019 goes EOL/EOS.

Hyper-V has been working flawlessly on many hosts for me, for at least the last 7 years. 2012 R2, 2016, and 2019. I just think its time to discuss alternatives.
-
@brandon220 we are currently on Hyper-v for 2 VM's (and one physical DC that bit the bucket, see my other posts) I'm interested in Proxmox as well to replace Hyper-V as we do have one silly need for 1 or 2 on prem servers (more for development/testing and provisioning phones than anything) so keep us posted
-
I just migrated two VMs off Hyper-V 2019 to Proxmox. Overall was pretty straight forward, biggest challenge is just understanding your aren't dealing with HDD files anymore - you import you VHDs into Proxmox and Proxmox deals with the filesystem.
-
I've got it up and running again in my lab. Have 1 Fedora server VM running as a test. So far, so good.

Partially because it's being phased out.

@brandon220
I have this on my whiteboard:
"That's the way we have always done it is NEVER the right answer"When I first peeked at Proxmox, it must have been about 7 years ago. It was not ready for primetime. I just started dipping my toes back in that pool in a homelab

Even if it was free, it wasn't the best pricing, lol. Since better products are free. VMware is NEVER even a "good" cost because it is never free. Everyone except VMware is free. If pricing is considered in any form, Vmware is right out the window. It's not always the wrong answer, but for pricing... that's always a huge negative in VMware's court.

YEah, seven years ago it wasn't ready. Not bad, but not ready. Today, it feels like the go to option.

I been working with Proxmox 3 years now and it is solid OS. I like it a lot been running some basic VMs on it not to fancy works like a charm.
-
Proxmox works but we prefer xcp-ng.
Virtualization itself is a commodity so it's the tools around it that matters most. We have many hosts and xcp-ng is the best fit for our needs.

What's amazing is that even when it has become a commodity, VMware has failed to make it feel that way. It still feels like it has all the problems of a one off, special case product that the never managed to polish.

I've moved most of our important stuff onto Proxmox over the last 2 to 3 years. It's been great.
I've been using the PBS as well for the backups - it's so much better than manually doing full backups of VMs (which was the case with KVM and it's tools). So thumbs up for Proxmox from me.

We've been using PBS too for backups more recently.
