Is VOIP.MS down?
-
@jaredbusch What is your sense of if @Skyetel or any other provider could contain such an attack?
Do you think voip.ms just got caught unprepared or is there just not really a defense for such an attack on a SIP service?

Any service provider can be attacked. @Skyetel is much better designed on the backend to handle things in the first place. But of course they could be targeted. I think they have better mitigations in place already though.
VoIP.ms' model is very rigid, with a DID pointing to a specific POP and all traffic having to go through that. This is one of the reasons I began looking at other providers. If you dig through my history on this community, you will see where I started using Twilio and then @Skyetel over the years. I have consistently kept VoIP.ms as the backup provider though.
There is also the cost difference in the service as well as telecom taxes. When setup right, @Skyetel has the taxes all handled for you and on your bill.

@jaredbusch What do you mean by "setup right" ?

Already started the port out process.
What does that mean Jared? That you're moving (porting) the numbers to another provider?
Yes. This outage is not the reason, but it did accelerate the timeline.
This was the last client that I active support day to day that used VoIP.ms as their primary provider. It was previously planned to migrate in October after another project was completed.
@JaredBusch - Just curious, were you able to port out or is the request still pending?

It ported out on Monday. Their Toll-Free ported out on Tuesday. VoIP.ms still has it in their system, but I expect them to take days/weeks to process all the port outs.

My numbers that where ported out on Monday were no longer listed in VOIP.ms as of this morning.
I've started another set of ports this morning.. they are going much slower than the previous rounds.

uh - maybe not... I just called one of them.. and it's in the new carrier's log.. so looks like that port is already done - just no paperwork to me yet.

If the new carrier is Skyetel and you are making a test call from Skyetel, it will route prior to port.
This is really the same for any carrier. Once it is listed in their network, calls on their network will use it.
