Need to Purchase a New Switch What Cisco Family?
-
Looking to Purchase a new switch for a customer's DCS system. They have an almost full 24 port Netgear now but want to go Cisco.
We will be adding about 10 devices in this project so looking to get a 48 port but want to choose a cisco product that has StackWise or similar for management and is the most up-to-date for purchasing in the next 6-8 weeks.
Can anyone recommend the cisco family/models I should be looking at?

@eleceng I'm just curious why the sudden change to Cisco?
-
yes - why Cisco?
Personally, unless there is a specific need, Netgear could do you fine, or an Edgeswitch.

Can't stack edgeswitches.

Really? I thought they had that.

The new Cisco 9200L series is commonly used by DCS systems.
C9200L-48T-4G for the 48 port 1G switch without PoE. -

Looked it up. no, they do not.
Now, not really an important thing for most of their target market. But surprising that they have not added it to the EdgeMax line.

Ok but so what?
Sure the OP mentioned it, but he’s not now moving to a 48 port switch and from the sounds of it will likely have over 15 ports free to start, what’s the time frame expected to need a second switch where this will matter? -

Most probably a "Recommendation" from the DCS people. Same happened to us, they recommended Cisco for everything. We went Netgear

Yeah. That's a major downgrade.

-
Cisco because it's a customer requirement as most of their other gear is Cisco as far as firewalls, routers, and switching.
-
@dashrender we will need to add another 48 port unit in less than 18 months but under a different project so that's why I wanted StackWise to be covered in that situation that I know is coming.

As someone who only purchases this type of gear once in a blue moon what would be my best vendor? Prefer someone online.

You'll get a few different views on this as everyone will have their "preferred" manufacturer of switches.
Like Edgeswitch, Unifi, TP-Link, Netgear etc etcPersonally I've been getting a few TP-Link Jetstream range, they have a central management solution.
But also like Dell for our main infrastructure, only had to phone them maybe 2 times in the last 6 odd years and support and always been quick and polite. -

Hit up DCW. Ask for Yonay, Ami, or Mike.

As much as we all want him to deploy anything but Cisco, it's a customer requirement. Assuming that that was true, it's the VAR, not the vendor, that he meant to ask for (the vendor rep.)
-
Vendor?
Are you a for or non-profit.
I used TecSoup )IIRC) and got hard / soft ware at a fraction of MSRP.
AFAIK, the two 24 (or 48) port Cisco Smart switch’s are still there and running- fifteen years later. (Hope they have been replaced by now honestly).

@scottalanmiller Yes I meant Reseller / VAR

Then definitely DCW. I told them to watch this thread.
