That pretty much sums it up. I was literally going to order a Huawei watch this week because I thought that the price and look was amazing. But no, that seems like a bad idea now (if they figure things out, I'll totally buy one to support them later.) Right now I need one this week to wear to Europe (smart watches are an important part of effective travel.) I want something attractive and very functional.
The Samsung is nice, but too pricey. I'm thinking $150 - $200. This is a utilitarian travel device not a fancy watch. Right now from quick research, I'm seeing a lot of love for Fossil and Amazfit. Anyone have experience or thoughts?
I have this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NC8PMUK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I didn't even realize Lenovo made watches. Not surprised, they are quite big.
That link goes to a Motorola Moto for me. What are you seeing?
Oh lol. Forgot about that.
Call it what it is. It's not a Lenovo.
It's still under the brand name Motorola, regardless of the parent company.
A Chevy is called a Chevy, not a GM.
A Chevy is totally a GM (and a Chevy.) It is 100% a GM, and GM tells you that. As someone who went to school inside a Chevy factory at a school called GMI, trust me, GM 100% considers Chevy to be a GM. A GM is what it "is", the Chevy name is the "marque".
Exactly, so call it a Chevy so everyone knows what the hell you are talking about.

The point is, it's 100% a Lenovo as much as any other product that Lenovo makes. The issue was you were trying to imply that my slapping a secondary brand name on it that it made it something else. So point call it "not a Lenovo" when that's exactly what it is.
It's fine to call it a Motorola as long as everyone involved understand that that means Lenovo and what that implies, if you use the term to hide what it really is, then it's not okay to use. Same if someone said that they had ethical issues with GM and you tried to tell them to buy a Chevy while attempting to imply or hide that it's just a GM by a different name.

You're more than welcome to call it a "GM Corvette". I'll stick with Chevy Corvette.

And when someone says "That's a GM, and tehre is an issue with them", you'd respond "It's a Chevy, not a GM", even though you know you are just stating something false? Why?
Clearly denying that it is a GM is crazy and misleading. That it is a "Chevy Corvette made by GM" doesn't change that it is a GM. It's a GM Chevy Corvette. Americans are just conditioned to not mention the maker when it comes to cars because we assume EVERYONE knows the company already.
-
@Obsolesce So for example...
You'd say that any recall that GM lists for its products doesn't apply to YOUR Chevy, because unlike what Chevy and GM claim, you claim that anything that applies to GM doesn't apply to YOUR Chevy.
Do you see how crazy that is? Chevy is part of the PRODUCT name, not the company.
Like Windows 10 1803. Windows 10 is the PRODUCT name. Microsoft is still the company that makes it. Just because a company makes something with a brand name doesn't make it not made by that company.
You can see how "branding" is used to confuse people pretty easily. Companies change their branding all the time to make people think that it is a different company/product/legal concern.
This is such a common trick to play on IT people, I made a video last year!

My whole point is to call it by the label. Not something up the line. Of course GM makes it, but it's called a Chevy. Yes Lenovo owns it, but it's called a Motorola .

But it's Lenovo owning Motorola that makes Motorola hardware a known security hole. As in compliance with any security regulation is now in a known failed state. That's why I harp on this minor fact.

Nothing allegedly about it, Lenovo is known to be harvesting data from their devices. @scottalanmiller verified this on a yoga2 well after they claimed the breaches to be fixed, and I verified it with a Motorola G4+.
As to the US doing anything, we know that customs is doing something to at least some devices, but not what.
Also, yes, I agree that both are bad and would result in non-compliance for things like HIPPA and PCI.

Allegedly.
Don't downplay known attacks. Lenovo has been caught red handed, multiple times. There is no comparable business entity. No one else has been caught in the same way, no one. It's totally unacceptable to act like it didn't happen. Doing so is directly calling us liars (we aren't reporting news, I'm one of the people that they harvested.) If you intend to do so, be up front and just say you think I'm a liar, don't pretend that it is alleged. If you personally like Lenovo enough that you are willing to overlook their actions, that's fine, but that's different than something being alleged - that's a lack of concern over the type of event as it pertains to you.

Yeah literally any website used on a Lenovo product had everything harvested, bank account - harvested, health information - harvested - porn habits - harvested.
Nothing was excluded.

I was just curious how he knows what was harvested. Did he capture packets being sent to them, was it all data? I'd like to see the results he's has showing all of his data was going there.

Fucking seriously? FFS, this is publicly known information.
It was bad that Lenovo did it. It was worse that they covered it up.
Lenovo has lied and covered it up and repeatedly done this.Superfish related:

Are you kidding? They took over the network connection. All of it, all traffic was controlled by them.
This is SO common knowledge. What world are you living in? You can't be in IT and not be aware of who the malicious players are and what happens in the industry. This is literally the biggest data breach / hacking scenario in the history of IT. There is nothing that has ever compared to it, no other vendor or agent or government has ever been caught on this scale. Everything else has been speculation, but Lenovo was caught as both the malicious actor and the distributor of the hacks repeatedly.

It's a shim, a man in the middle attack. They could chose what to send after the fact, after they had already gotten access to anything on the network.
