When Microsoft moved to version 8, was there a lot of desktops that couldn't run it due to the requirements? I remember when having 512 memory was standard. I would think a few homes were still running older systems at that point.

Pretty sure 512 megs of RAM was not the common thing when Windows 8 came out. Perhaps 2 GB, Though my shops have been running 4 GB since Windows 7. We are only now jumping to 8 GBs in my shops (OK We're a bit behind on that move).
Moving to Windows 8 was likely only an issue for those that had XP, not those that had Windows 7.

Windows XP will barely run on 512MB. Windows Vista required 512MB and recommended 1GB. Windows 7 required 1GB for the 32bit version and 2GB for the 64bit version. More recommended.
Windows 8 and 8.1 required the same as Windows 7. So the "leap" was from Vista to 7, after that, it stayed flat for the next two releases. The number of people skipping 8 because of hardware requirements likely was approximately zero.
Remember that each version of Windows since Vista has gotten faster, not slower.

It's true, 2GB was the super low end for Windows 7, and 4GB was more the norm. I had 6GB during the Win 7 era and it wasn't considered to be much, 8GB was a good amount but not crazy.

Agreed - I personally had 8+ GB of RAM - virtual machines baby...

pffft - 16GB, now 32GB... all the things.

Interesting, I didn't know Windows 8 has many features, but I don't think I can consider install Windows 8 in a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 3 GB RAM.

You should not consider ANY old OS, really ever. Outside of learning what support used to look like, which is effectively worthless, conceptually using an old OS is a bad idea. Windows 8, especially, is only one generation newer than Windows 7 which is already crazy old. Windows 8 is something like eleven versions old already!
