Perhaps traveling desires will go way down in a generation or two, but I think for now - Americans at least would very likely want to spend as much time as possible traveling, etc. Why be idle (or hobbying at home) when you can be at an amusement park? or out seeing things you've never seen before?
Current trends say the opposite. Americans are amongst the least traveled people in the world, while having the most capacity.
And things like amusement parks are not travel, those are typically local. But very expensive. Much more expensive than travel.
Interesting - I wonder if it's the lack of access - i.e. the perception of our easy to travel neighbors is that of 3rd world countries, undesirable locations. Our northern neighbor is basically USA Jr, and I'm not aware of any thing really cool in Canada that are must see things for me personally. So I don't really consider it that fair to judge US citizens compared to the rest of the world.
If you live in Europe - you can travel so easily - no passport - and cheaply (compared to flying from the US to Europe - now sure, if you live in a major international airport city, flights can be more reasonable, but still not cheap) and in general is like 2-3 hour flight, not 6 hour min.
So... given that... and knowing that in the EU you can go to SO many countries without needing a passport, isn't it super shocking that Europeans get passports so much more often than Americans do? You made my point for me, Europeans don't need passports to see country after country, one safe place after another, unlimited history and culture and food. Yet they do, constantly, go abroad. Americans need a passport to do anything, yet almost never do.
No, it's not shocking - Americans are attached to all their stuff - Europeans are more about experiences, at least from my exposure... So Americans are willing to travel short distances for low fees, where Europeans are more likely willing to spend more on flights, etc to get over here or anywhere a passport is needed.
And who said anything about the need for a passport? You brought that up. I personally love to get out to other countries, but most people I know have and do travel around the US, so no passport is required.
The point was that Americans don't have passports. The ratio is super low, even though we need them for even the tiniest thing. But Europeans broadly have them, even though they can spend a lifetime traveling and not need one.
So what? If their chances of using it are low why do they have them? Because they are free or near free? Because it serves as their normal ID?
Your point might have been that they have more than US citizens do, but so what? I didn’t say anything about passport based travel, you brought that up after my generic travel comments.

Why do you say that? Give me examples of people living to work instead of the opposite.
Everywhere.

Almost everyone? The only point in their life is to get a job and make babies. Not even in that order often.
I work to live the life I want. I move from jobs to new ones and make my life better.

The US is the one of only two countries in the developed world, the other being Mexico, where with the increase in free time brought about by modern conveniences throughout the 20th century didn't turn it into leisure time but instead went to more work time.

Because you need a passport to GO somewhere else in the US. What are you missing? You were saying that Americans need to travel. But we know that isn't true, Americans are the least traveling large group around. And many that travel do so against their "will" for work or family obligations, not out of a desire to actually leave home.

You do? Since when do you need a passport to travel between states in the US? I'm going to Chicago next week - I don't plan to take my passport.
-
I think Americans don't travel (passport or no passport) because they'd rather have stuff than experiences. It's a cultural difference.
LOL - sometimes I wish my house would burn down so it would be easy for me to let go of all of my possessions. I'm definitely not immune to the typical American attitude of collecting stuffs... though in the past 5 years, I've definitely cut way back, and even sold some stuff - but I have a long way to go.

Next year there are quite a few states that will if you're traveling by air.
For instance the US government will require NY residents to have an enhanced license or carry their passports around to travel by air to anywhere in the US. I believe that Pennsylvania, California, and a few others will be in the same boat. You can get the older, cheaper, non-RealID compliant license but you won't be able to fly interstate with it.

I know that I'm abnormal for Merica. 850sq ft apartment, only half in actual use.

I'm not sure what you mean by half in use - I assume 850 is a two bedroom, possibly 3 bedroom house with a basement. So you likely use the kitchen, bathroom, living room and one bedroom. That would leave the basement and 1-2 bedrooms not in use.. is that right?

Looks like being in Nebraska - that's covered by our newer standard driver's license. I'm sure there are some states that will allow a non real ID compliant card to be the base, then citizens will have to purchase an upgraded card - but damn.. that should just be the required standard since this is going to be a federal requirement.
Though, this is not really the same as a passport.
To get my new ID, I had to produce two billing statements with different companies with my name/address on them - and my old ID. This is nothing like a Passport check.

NY got an extension IIRC and it will be required in 2020... but there are some states that didn't get the extension and the requirements went into effect in 2018.

Starting next year?
I wonder how they are going to enforce that? Will the TSA agent be the one enforcing it when they are checking your boarding pass? I'm sure you don't know, I'm just wondering out loud.

We were talking about international travel, not going to the store or whatever. People mean international mostly when they say travel (maybe not americans, again, proving the point that you feel Chicago is travel.)
Also there ARE places in the US where passports are required or effectively required, like southern Texas and Puerto Rico.

There is a strong move towards requiring "documents" inside of the US. It's always been illegal before, but they are overlooking those laws or working around them by doing things like claiming the whole country is a border zone not covered by the constitution.
