Weigh in on Holiday Career Topics

The holiday season is coming. We're looking to develop topics for a holiday edition of the Nerd Journey Podcast. We'd love for you to weigh in on the questions below and would talk through the community feedback on the air. Please answer the following questions (all through the lens of career):
- What are you thankful for in your career / current job?
- What are some career-related items you should be thankful for but have not been in the past?
- What has the effect of your job been on your holiday experiences (i.e. allowed you to unplug, forced you to work, etc.)?
- How do you allow yourself / force yourself to unplug on holidays (assuming you get some time off)?
- From a professional standpoint, what are your resolutions for 2019?

Flexibility to travel and be with family. For example, for the first holiday (Tofurkey Day) I'm traveling first to Wisconsin, then to NY for time with family. Staying extra long to celebrate my eldest daughter's big two digit birthday with her grandpa. It'll be our first Thanksgiving in NY in a really long time. Then the second holiday (Christmas) we will be in Houston for a few weeks with the in laws there. Thanks to my job, I'm able to spend so much more time with family in different locations.
- What has the effect of your job been on your holiday experiences (i.e. allowed you to unplug, forced you to work, etc.)?
I work holidays, mostly so others don't have to. But things get really slow and very little happens. It's a slow time when I get a chance to disconnect more than usual.
- How do you allow yourself / force yourself to unplug on holidays (assuming you get some time off)?

Lot's a of stuff to learn. I went from a job that was kind of a 'make work' situation to a job where it feels like I'm working with and learning something new every week.

Get to unplug from the learning I 'have to do' to keep up at work, to put some some time into the learning I want to do.

Lots of visit happens over the holiday, so the laptop gets set aside and the book gets put down. But I'll probably find myself waking up at 6 am to spend sometime reading/labbing.

I'm lucky to work for a company that always gives us the day after Thanksgiving off, as well as making Xmas a long weekend. The bosses kinda make us unplug and take time off.

That I'm in control.

I recently realised that if I had to do a helpdesk job, I'd quit and be a janitor. That's not an exaggeration. So I'm thankful I am not in helpdesk, but I imagine if I was one of those delusional people who think helpdesk is the gateway to IT then I'd be fine with it, because then I can say that any day I'll somehow get moved to the IT department just like some guy online claimed he did. He makes $150,000 a year, he said so on Spiceworks, it must be true.
- What has the effect of your job been on your holiday experiences (i.e. allowed you to unplug, forced you to work, etc.)?
I've never taken a holiday from a job in my entire life.
- How do you allow yourself / force yourself to unplug on holidays (assuming you get some time off)?
I've never had time off except to handle other business or things that needed to be done, typically bureaucratic government nonsense or dealing with family. By limiting family troubles to only my children I've saved a lot of money and time previously wasted on my extended family, more so by simply not speaking to any of them anymore. I regret not having done that earlier.
- From a professional standpoint, what are your resolutions for 2019?

- I am thankful for my current job as I got back to the areas I really love which are implementing different solutions for the wide array of client we support and allow me to learn new technologies in the process.
- I should be thankful for the professional relationships I have made over the last three years with a group of many IT Professionals both in here ML and SW and offline which have made my career take another level I did not see myself going. Thankful also for the support of my family in what I do. Thankful that I am also learning to write technical articles and be involved on multiple technical communities.
- Holidays have been usually without expectation to work but the weeks and day leading to them have been the busiest as it seems that everyone wants to get their things done then.
- I do get off on the holidays, unfortunately 5 out of 10 times there is someone that doesn't want to be on vacation and wants to work or there is an emergency. The wait to allow myself to disconnect is to turn off my cellphone and limit computer access.
- For 2019 I am looking to be more efficient with my time, have the correct priorities and balance with Work and Learning new Technologies, better soft and technical skills.

The flexibility to be home whenever I need to be or just to take off with the family for whatever. Election day is a no school day here because the elementary and junior high schools are polling places. I took the kids to downtown Chicago to the art museum and then Japanese BBQ for late lunch.

Seriously though, I work most holiday's. I generally use holidays to test restoring backups.- From a professional standpoint, what are your resolutions for 2019?
I don't do resolutions. I'll simply continue to grow myself professionally and personally and work towards my employment goals.
