I have some issues with the cloud is cheaper statement that I hear continue to popup from time to time...

So do I. Without knowing anything else, hosted is normally cheaper, but not always.

@dariena It's cheaper to implement, not cheaper to host forever if you are weighing the "buying my own hardware". But you also have to include the cost of replacing the hardware, performing upgrades over the usable life, electric, HVAC, outages etc

So while you might spend $100,000 over whatever length of time, it is often cheaper for the same usable span compared to running your own equipment.

Isn't the most common preference chart Hosted("Cloud") -> Colo -> On Premise. Once it's cheaper to move from cloud to owning your own server, it's also almost always cheaper to have it placed in a Colo than in your own building.

I wouldn't say preference. Preferences are random if you are talking emotions. If you are talking business, the preference is only what is right for your scenario.

I also often feel these discussions don't always take into fact how DR will work, or specifically where will you fall in your hosted providers' priority during their outage. DR of course isn't a conversation everyone will think about based on size of course(though they should).

@dariena regardless of how services are provided; DR needs to be a part of the conversation.

@oksana Sounds like somebody has been drinking the "LAN-less IT" juice

Cloud encourages LANless, but LANless is equally doable with and without cloud. And many clouds, especially Azure, push LAN-based even when cloud.

I'd absolutely dispute the statement that folks don't think about backup when data is stored onprem.

In addition... my favored side? I'd say I don't prefer either, simply that each is looked at in a more encompassing view in terms of what's involved in costs.

I think we all have very opposite experiences. Including threads from the last two days. This is something so common, while always shocking, it's a shock we get continuously.

Right, there are loads of factors not factored in anywhere. I think cloud tends to get attention because it's the popular new thing and people just assume that there must be a good reason for it, and they leap to "it must be cheaper" as that is the thing that they understand.

@scottalanmiller Right and they leap at that without a full picture, that's all I was admittedly trying to say.
