      We're experiencing latency with our persistent VDIs in our VMware View environment. We're struggling with poor performance with our VDI desktops. Users are experiencing lag when dragging windows between multiple monitors, ‘choppy’ graphics/video, and slow application launching. The problems occur with local users. Both LAN and WAN could be involved. Also, file transfer times from the local desktop to the virtual desktop are super slow. Our bandwidth is dedicated 50Mbps up and down. Is there anything we can do?

        LAN mostly meaning MORE often than WAN?

          @scottalanmiller Our VDIs are hosted externally by the MSP and we're using VMware-Horizon-Client-4.7.0 to connect to them with PCOIP protocol. I'm thinking it could be either LAN or WAN issue, not sure.

            @jblaze

            If Lan is the same then its not the network causing the issue, what is the GPU involved model ?

              oh, easily WAN then. WAN is typically bad for that.

                VMware has some decent troubleshooting tools. I believe the client can log dropped packets and latency. @StorageNinja may have the kb to enable it.

                  Tipically, you will never be happy with that. The only environment I've ever seen where user were HAPPY with VDI was a dedicated LAN with a dedicate Dell m1000 with low per-node desktop density.

                    In theory application launching can be fast, but application performance will always suffer trying to go over a WAN.

                      I'm new to VDIs so not entirely sure if I'm asking the right questions. The server is hosted externally by our MSP and they're trying to determine what the cause is.

                        Probably the WAN connection would be my guess.

                          That it is external alone is almost certainly the problem. VDI can work remotely, but is often relatively painful. Also, be aware, while there is some extreme edge cases where you can do hosted VDI, this has traditionally not been allowed and unless your MSP has figured out some extremely new and rare licensing with Microsoft, those VDIs aren't legal.
