Routers and switches

I am upgrading my network from comcast business class to fiber.. Currently I have 150/20 I am going to fiber 50/50. I was wondering what people's thought process are, I want to get a really good router, and i currently have an hp 2920 switch and a nortel baystack 5510 switch. your thoughts.

UBNT (Ubiquiti) Makes some excellent cost effective devices.
Many here have the ERL at home and in the office.

Depending on your needs - the throughput of the ER-L might not be up to task for you, but then again might be.
The EdgeSwitches are good and cost effective.
If you are are going to use Unifi Access Points, you can consider the Unifi Switches, their prices had come come down to nearly the same as EdgeSwitches the last time I looked and are controlled by the Unifi Controller, which can be convenient.

Ubiquiti EdgeRouter for sure. The ERL for $65 is all that you need.

As long as the ER-L is only handling generic firewall/routing things, should be. You start doing filtering at the ER-L, probably not.

WAY faster than you have. I'm running 160/160 fiber through it and it doesn't break a sweat. It'll do gigabit.

What do you need with a router then? Do you need a media converter? i.e. from fiber to ethernet?
The ER-L can't do that but the ER-X SFP can, but again, you'll need to check the specs to make sure it can handle your throughput and PPS.

One of the key reasons that we recommend the Ubiquiti EdgeRouters is that they are some of the fastest around.

That doesn't explain the need for double routers, though. If you have pfSense, why add another router? Are you just looking to upgrade from pfSense to something more serious?

Out of your office? that seems odd. Is it cost effective to host yourself vs using something like Vultr?

I'm guessing that the ISP is delivering Fiber to him.. he has to convert it to ethernet for his network, or run fiber NICs everywhere

Correct isp is going to give me a switch to connect to fiber, they called it ppp then I will have my LAN that i have to configure my router to. Alittle above what I know i was told on port needs to be connected to the fiber switch and configured wan ppp then the other to my gateway address

Not true if you do anything other than route and I have posted as much more than once.
If you enable any traffic policies at all your max bandwidth throughput will be in the 60mbps range.

I've literally never heard of an ISP that hands off fiber. Who do you know that does that?

Correct, but he's not asking if it'll do that AND something else. It'll handle gigabit speeds as a router.

This is why I was confused by what the OP wanted. he originally asks for a router, then but then later says he's using PFSense... so if he's happy with PFSense, what is the router for?
