They claim to have a warrant. But Dreamhost is confident enough to take them to court.
Don't they have to disclose the contents of the warrant? I know they can put a hush order on DreamHost in relation to that but they should know what the Government is claiming. Probably actually need to read more of the article.
The website was used in the development, planning, advertisement and organisation of a violent riot that occurred in Washington DC on January 20, 2017
Oddly ties in nicely with some stuff we talked about earlier today.

I think that they did disclose it and that's why Dreamhost is fighting it. They claim the contents aren't valid.

There is no valid reason to need the public IP addresses of 1.3 million visitors to a website. Visiting a website is not illegal.

Just seems like they are going digging for doxing information, that will conveniently "leak" to the public.
Of course I need to get me some of that tinfoil hat everyone keeps talking about.

I could legally visit websites on how to make pipe bombs, or where I can purchase a human being for any reason at all.
It doesn't mean I've done something illegal, even making a pipe bomb isn't illegal. It's using the pipe bomb to hurt/kill that is illegal.

even making a pipe bomb isn't illegal.
Making it might not be, but possession of it may be depending on the jurisdiction.

True, but intent needs to be considered.
I might legitimately need a pipe bomb to break apart some concrete at my house.

Intent has nothing to do with possession laws.

That's not how that works. It depends on jurisdiction but possession of an improvised explosive device is illegal in most states.

What makes something improvised rather than carefully planned?

OMG he has an improvised explosive device!
Citizen: oh no, I researched this and carefully made this with proper investigation and skill.
Oh okay then, carry on.

That's the term that's regularly used for things like pipebombs. It's part of our legal and social lexicon.

I wonder how they would treat you if you have some malware code on your machine that your happen to be looking at, with no intention of being used.... I bet they would find something to prosecute you with?
-
They would surely have to prove that you have intentions, innocent until proving guilty??
-
They want it to prove "Malice Aforethought" on the people that they arrested. That they planned, conspired, to do what they did.
