Microsoft SQL Backup Solution
-
Hello All,
I would like to get the suggestion on SQL backup Solution. Currently our environment is have two node SQL cluster with around 16 TB of Data. We are using Rapid Recovery as the Backup solution. We have upgraded our Windows Cluster to 2012 with Clustered Share Volume and the SQL Cluster to 2014.
Now we are facing issue with Rapid Recovery as its not able to understand the clustered share volume and we are not able to take the backup of our SQL storage on Block level. As per Rapid Recovery, they are not sure when they will release a version which support CSV.
We are in a situation to look into another SQL backup Solutions. Currently I am testing the Unitrends backup Virtual appliance and Its is good in backup, but I am having some issues on the retention polices as they provide only minimal policy which is on the SQL instance level.
Kindly suggest me a good backup solution for the SQL database which is having application native backup agent or CSV support , rather than block level backup. Also with the backup policy and retention policy of
Backup : - Daily Incremental and Monthly Full backup
Retention : - 2 Week incremental and Last month Full backup.Backup : Every 6 Month
Retention : Last 6th MonthBackup : Every Year
Retention : Last 2 year.If this can be achieved in Unitrends please share the details.
Thanks in Advance.

Unitrends and Veeam are often the go to solutions when discussing backup. You're already considering Unitrends, all that needs to be sorted out is the retention.
Have you bought Unitrends, do you have support?

So the only support option would be their support channel / chat.
It can be found here under chat. Enter a description of the problem, and see if the issue exists, if not move to the chat and see if anyone is online who can assist.
I haven't used unitrends, so I can't speak to the issue you're having.

Boy, to get a real worth while understanding of a product, I would expect them to give more support during an evaluation period. Perhaps you can call them and they will give you a support incident to call in on.

You'll want to be looking at Veeam.

Since we know you have the infrastructure for Rapid Recovery, Veeam is probably the least expensive option. Assuming they support CSV, which I have no clue.

@scottalanmiller We are using Physical SQL Cluster with CSV.

I would like to have a Backup solution of SQL with native agent base backup rather than Block level backup, so that I can restore in DB level.

Are you saying that because you think that Veeam does not have an agent?

Isnt' this in production? Databases are the last thing you'd want physical.

Both agent and block level do this equally. Being agent based is not a factor in this capability.

Thanks scott, I will be testing the Veeam solution also.

This is in Production and currently we are doing SQL native backup as the Rapid Recovery is not able to see the clustered share volume to take block level backup

Production and physical really don't go together. Physical implies that someone didn't think that this was a very important workload. Databases are the top thing to virtualize and have been universally virtualized the longest as virtualization adds stability and safety.

@scottalanmiller Agree scott, unfortunately Management current decision is to continue the SQL in the Physical cluster and seems they have no plans to change. If possible kindly share me some details and documents which can help me to propose the same to my management for review.

If they need documents to convince them to protect their data, we've got bigger issues. Virtualization in the industry best practice and has been for a very long time. It's safer in many ways. All benefits, no downsides. The ball is in their court to explain why they have been reckless.
