I would guess you have an opportunity to mount on a building or tower for free since leasing space from a tower owner and engineers/permit fees haven't been brought up?
Will be interested to see how you fair with UBNT.
What city/zip/are is this in?
I would need as close as I can get to the barrier highway and there are no towers close enough. Therefore, I'm going to need to drop about $50k just to get a tower site up just to get started and installing customers.
Mabank, Texas 75147
So a negative $50K just to start seems like a horrible investment strategy. . .
Are you f***ing [moderated] stupid?
Are you fing [moderated] stupid is the question if you think building a tower in the middle of a town is worth it. Fing [moderated] sign up for a lease on an existing building or water tower.
Anything but building your own f***ing [moderated] tower.
Dumb a** [moderated]!

Where will you get your WISP's internet feed from?
Spectrum services the area, just not a reasonable enough area. . .
They'd be an easy competitor as they are offering <1MB download speed services for $50/month in the area.
But if their speeds are so awful, where are you expecting to get enough bandwidth for your WISP?
WTF

Again, this was before he stated he was using someone on the other side of town.
And to that point @NerdyDad if there is another provider on the opposite site of town, are they just outside of the region you're looking to provide service to?

Oh @JaredBusch I need to mail you some stuff, send me your address.

The point here is that 50 K investment is not large it all for somebody starting their own business in any industry.
Your post said nothing about thinking it was bad enough just for a tower compared to renting or something like that.

Clearly there is a misunderstanding here.
Any investment that can be avoided is a good thing. Wasting 50K or more for a tower of your own is a horrible investment. @NerdyDad is in a town, with plenty of buildings around. I'm sure plenty of which would be willing to lease their roofs to him.
Which would remove a shit ton of paperwork and cost from him starting his own business. If you can't see that as an obvious fact I have no way to help you understand business.
-
@dustinb3403 buildings come with their own host of issues that can potentially make a tower a much better investment.

And that is easily explained rather that calling me insane.
Yes a lease of the outside of a building could be more costly, but explain your stance. Rather than jumping down my throat.

Get along boys.....

@NerdyDad Check and see if Cogent can come to your area. They have been very helpful with our Internet setup (we have an AS number and still had to pry-out of Verizon's hands our owned IP addresses). Also if Telia can get out there (have a PoP in Dallas) they have dirt cheap Tier-1 bandwidth. Wasn't someone on here doing a fiber mapping site as well that you could check?
-
@NerdyDad Keep us posted on how this goes. I'm actually really interested in this. (Not knowledgeable whatsoever but interested!)

Tier 2 and Tier 1 ISPs are what you'd be looking at. If you have any datacenters or large business/school campuses near you they are probably being serviced by an ISP in one of these tiers. Definitely worth asking them who they go through.
