Comcast just told me to call WOW

Funny, my wife started the cord cutting conversation with me last night.
We should consider ditching cable and just buying Hulu/Netflix/good antenna/HBO Go/Playstation Vue, and we'll be golden.
LOL, all that shit ends up costing the same as cable (except Netflix, we already have it).
Why not just get slingtv and a box that can connect to it?
I picked up a Channel Master DVR+ and slingtv, total cost first month was $350ish, and my monthly bill is $26 for slingtv which I can cancel whenever. . .
-
Which I've not had a cable tv or dish bill in over 6 years. My bill was $90/month. . . so the ROI was very rapid.
I didn't get slingtv until a short while ago either, just OTA tv.

We're good with just Netflix and Amazon Prime.

@tim_g Us too. We don't miss it at all. With that being said, I need to get a good antenna so that I can get the major OTA networks for Football season.

We're staying away from Hulu. Costs about the same as premium TV itself. We already have Netflix and we're keeping that. Considering dropping Diretv @ $140/month to Sling @ $60-70/month for the same if not more channels, cloud DVR, and no equipment in the house. Just about anything can turn into a TV, such as a smart TV, your phone, your computer, chromecast, etc.
I tried PS Vue last year, I really didn't like the cloud DVR - I don't think I could FF through commercials, could be wrong though.. but I specifically remember I hated the guide. And each different player, had a different guide setup.

What are you watching specifically that isn't carried over the air? Or on a service like SlingTV?

It might be on Sling.. now I have to manage a DVR thing though..
Does the DVR manage the sling box itself?

What are these "alternate ISPs?"

Yes, the one I have does have the capability to connect directly to the service.

Does the DVR manage the sling box itself?I think you may be confusing this with the Sling boxes that would replicate your physical cable box connections to other devices/apps.
This SlingTV is a live (and some on-demand) content service that carries popular cable channels (TNT, ESPN, etc.) You bring your own connection and device, and it gives you access to whatever channels are in the package you subscribe to.

Right - that's fine, as long as I can get a DVR that has the service directly inside it to record what I want for later viewing. And can also at minimum FF through commercials, at best, skip them.

I feel sorry for you guys... Almost every where in my town I have a choice of at least 2 ISPs, if not 3 of them (not counting wireless ISPs). And they are all pretty decent options.

Plex has now released their own DVR for OTA. Plus theres a script that you can put in that will automatically cut out commercials. But it doesn't implement SlingTV yet and requires a Plex plass along with the OTA->IP converter box.

But Plex Pass can be a one time $150 purchase

OTA is a non-starter here
-
I am thinking about setting up a Plex compatible OTA DVR myself, but I first need to get a new antenna. The simple $50 attic antenna I have is not good enough if I want to actually record and watch stuff.

Use antennaweb.org
75 Channels form 23 Stations.

Nice, so they are telling you to call and complain, like all of their customers. . .
LOL
No. WOW is an alternate ISP.
AT&T WOW. I used to work for them on their 3rd shift tech support when Netscape was the browser of choice.
