My hours are whatever I want. Generally:

      • start working around 9am or 10am and work until 1pm or so.
      • Then I take lunch for an hour or so.
      • Work until 3pm when the kids comes home and deal with homework and such for a bit.
      • Go back to work and generally work until 6pm.
      • Be with the family until they kids go to bed.
      • work for an hour or two about 9pm

Generally come up a bit short of 8 hours a day. But I also do work on the weekends with maintenance windows and such.

I averaged 41.5 hours a week last year.

      You're also a consultant/hourly worker.

Keep in mind I am salary so no additional pay...

Salary does not mean you have to work for free. So you need to verify what your terms of hire were and do not do anything outside the terms without being compensated for it. Generally with a salary employee that does not get overtime, this comes as comptime.

Interesting - I was pretty sure someone around these parts said you're not a professional unless you're putting in 48-60 hours a week. It's the nature of being a professional. Also the reason for being exempt Salary (meaning no OT). Not saying they were right or wrong, I'm saying this to spark conversation.

Exempt Salary (in NY) in relation to IT work is now solely on management. If you are working on a server, moving equipment etc you're entitled to Overtime.

So will ES does exist the overtime overs have no bearing on it. It a matter of the work you do according to that time, according to the insane-man who would say such a thing.

Not flexible at all, but I don't ever work outside of 8:30 - 4:30 and I never work weekends.

Yeah, because you are a contractor, not an in house employee.

I'm curious though - Hey @scottalanmiller what kinds of benefits should wired be getting? Those of the City for whom he works 99.9% of the time, or those of his contracting company? I was always confused on where you stood on this.

My company has tried to get me to stay late, I just refuse.

I have pretty good flexible hours.
When I started this position I had a standing Friday afternoon appointment so I worked it out that my shift was
              M-F 7-5
              F 7-11

It's normal for me to roll in around 7:10, most office staff isn't in until 7:50, but the boss gets here anytime between 6:30-8:30, seemingly at random.
I frequently work until 6 or 7 during the week.

I work weekends when an upgrade requires it.

I was working last night until 12:30 AM - ug (today's going to be long)

See, from my point of view you should have been able to get some sleep, and show up late, but that's me....

Good thing they like you. You definitely have an interesting contract setup. But being a consultant, you definitely have some freedoms of negotiation that most normal employees don't - i.e. you supporting more users/clients/customers = you get more pay, even if you do zero more work.

For me, if we double in size, I don't get double pay, or even 10% more - I just get more work to do.

And JB - well he just gets to bill his customer more - so he says, bring it on bitch 😛

                      What do they say?

They ask what needs to occur in order fix an issue and if down time is required it has to be scheduled with the city, typically after hours or on the weekend. If they ask me if I can stay I say no.

oh, I probably could have. But at the same time I personally wanted to be here to make sure there where no problems first thing in the morning.

My boss is a CPA - no, she can't handle anything IT. I'm a one man IT shop.

theoretically flexible but actually bound to company employers time (as for support): 8:30-18:30. lunch time is 2 hours.
I tend to be a bit of flexible at entrance and exit timing.

also if I have to do something "destructive" I use night hours or saturdays, gaining some hours to stay at home during the mon-fri 9/5 frame (I usually reserve the friday afternoon).

I heard 2+ hour lunches were the norm in Spain. How about where you are (is it Italy?) - is 2 hour lunches the norm?

I have quite flexible hours. I am hourly and make OT for anything over 40.

                                      M-Th 9-7
                                      Fr 9-1

Never on call, all after hours/weekend work is usually OT, and my boss is super cool about the whole thing. He lets me make up hours after the fact instead of making me use PTO, which is great. Plus he is very technical and can handle anything when I'm not here.
