Wasn't he just looking at some place on the West Coast? I mean that should blow expensive East coast cities out of the water (not Rochester or Orlando).
I'm not aware that he was. The east coast isn't THAT bad. Boston and NYC are, of course. But lots of the east coast is cheaper than the west.
I haven't traveled as much as you, but everywhere I've been on the east coast is bad (mostly the big cities). Northern Virginia (as you are already well aware) is insane.
It depends on where you live Alexandria isn't that bad. Had an ex-girlfriend that lived there.
That's where I was staying. I was hearing about $1500 a month for a basic apartment in a decent area..
$1300-1500. That is what I pay right now though
That's what I pay for a 4200 sqft home in Omaha, Ne (owner)
Yeah but you've told me I make a lot which my salary is extremely low for what I do in my area

From what I recall you saying you make... You make a low/low-mid range salary for nearly anywhere in the US. But for your area you are making crap.
1500 sqft homes cost what there in a decent area?
In my town 1500 sqft would cost $120k ish
Maybe $250K
So let's assume a middle IT salary in Omaha is $70k what should wire make to match it?
As a one man band? 80-90k
-
Hudson Valley had a market crash. So you can get 2,000 sq ft. within easy commute of NYC for $250K now in one of the most beautiful regions of the country. Loads of stuff, no need for a car. Nebraska isn't crazy cheap like it used to be. Considering that NYC salaries are often double, there is less risk of being out of work and more ability to move up the ladder, in many ways... Nebraska is expensive now and NYC is cheap.

He's probably need around $80-95K to live the same. But I think the salary scale is much higher. Junior Admins in rural NJ were $105K over a decade ago. So mid-level IT woudl be more like $120K.

Right, but in comparing the cost of living, you have to look at the pay scale points, not what you individually make. And you commute from a high cost market into a low cost one to work. Which causes all kinds of problems.

I don't commute anymore but that changed recently. Now I have to find a job in the local area that pays me the right amount. I am kind of waiting to study for my RHCE to hopefully get something more linux related but who knows.
