Well, my first interview is Tuesday, even before my final pay check is due
Congrats. Doing what?
Branch IT support for a Fortune 500 company in Columbus, OH. Lots of opportunity for promotion from within the company. Also, the same company my brother-in-law works for, so it was easy to get my name in front of the proper people instead of having to get past HR first.
Knowing people helps... My first ever IT job I got of my own recognizance, turns out I was friends with the guy's kid, ha ha ha.
I'm too much of a homebody to ever know anyone. All of my friends are all over the country now
So next time you job hunt... look where your friends live!
Indeed
I've yet to get a job in IT that was not through my contacts

Contacts are really the big secret of IT jobs. Seems like most everyone gets their jobs this way, often even newbies.

I've had the opposite experience and have done better at organizations with no internal contacts.

Well, depending on how things go tomorrow, I may be headed down that road.

I know about quite a few openings in the Orlando area that are actively seeking employees. It may not be ideal for you, but lower cost of living and no state income tax.

LOL. I don't think you have a good concept of his cost of living. Orlando is SO much more expensive.

I would only move if it were a job from Disney for at least $150k/yr and they had some moving benefit+bonus. I'd love to give being a cast member a try.

Yeah. The area I currently live in has a crazy low cost of living, and I'm even on the very low end of this area currently (living with a high-school buddy will do that.) Moving anywhere else in the country will about double my cost of living expenses at a minimum.

I would have to make double my salary to basically break even compared to other states in the Northeast when you consider the cost of living.

I'm in Amish Country Ohio. I got sliced honey ham for $3.25/lb this past weekend, to give you and idea.

Right, I know there are places much cheaper than Orlando, but Orlando is cheap compared to other large cities have a large IT base.

I believe it. At least for the moment, I'm much better off to be unemployed here than employed for the same wage elsewhere.

Pretty sure even if you do. Orlando might be low, but it's not even in the ballpark. I can buy a house in his area for $35K.

42nd... where he is at wouldn't even be on the list. That's how much more it is. They aren't even comparable. Cost of everything is so much lower where he is, except for the state tax thing.

One of the other local IT guys I know recently bought a house for $30k. He renovated it and is thinking about moving, he'll sell the thing for $120k

Rochester vs. Orlando
If you include the state income tax, I would say it's a break even

Note: This is considering an $80k salary.
