Sub $600 laptop

Our plan is to get an Asus ZenBook once the finances allow. Much better quality and design.

Maybe Dell build quality is better than Lenovo, but I can't find a suitable high-end ultrabook... the XPS 13 has that terrible coil whine issue, I've follow the whole story in the Dell official forum. Seems that they aren't capable of fix this issue... it's the second or third generation with coil whine, both 13' and 15' XPS.

@Stuka has the XPS 13. Do you get any whine from it?

Have you checked out the Asus ZenBook 3? I'm really interested in that.
ASUS ZenBook 3 UX390UA
Not under $600. But not crazy.

#1: Keep in mind that Lenovo is a never-use company now. Basically anything requiring you keep full control of data will regulate away the use of Lenovo at all.
#2: #1 makes me very sad, because their Thinkpad line is the only custom made notebook chassis anymore. They're more durable, and I love the little eraser mouse. -

What about Linux compatibility?
Hard to test without having one here. My RoG runs Linux. @DustinB3403 has a RoG with Linux as well.

$600 laptop recipe:
Go on ebay, find yourself a decent Latitude (dell)
Buy yourself a solid state drive, size to taste.
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147372
Install windows on it.
Enjoy a very good quality laptop for cheap that you can actually get parts for and fix yourself easily.

Why ruin a perfectly good laptop?
Season the operating system to taste
Windows is a bit salty for some lol

We're starting to migrate from Lenovo T460 and T560 to Dell Latitude. It seems more durable for 25% less the cost of the Lenovo.

Did someone have "The Lenovo" talk with management, or did the price bring them to their senses?

We were actually starting to see some weird issues with Excel 2016. We tried uninstalling/reinstalling, turning off updates, making sure it was fully patched, both 32-bit & 64-bit, everything. We ran out of options and decided to try out an entirely new platform and consider Dell anyways.
I tried having the Lenovo security issue talk with them, but we're not under any additional regulations besides a normal business, so there was no outside pressure forcing us to check security. But, if we could get a better laptop for a cheaper value, then we were going to do it. So, to answer your question, it was the price.

We have one at the office. I like it, but then again I don't use it everyday

16.04, 16.10 and 17.04 all work great on mine.

Have you priced out Asus? They have some nice offerings.

I didn't mean it seriously :D.
Going back to the topic, it's a shame that Dell can't remedy to the coil whine issue, the XPS 13 is almost a perfect laptop apart from that.
