Anyone use Synology MailPlus server (Email Server Search Continues...)
-
Google bought it SO long ago. You could buy it from Google for many years. But it was still phased out years ago. LOL That's a blast from the past.
Check out The Email Laundry instead.

Quick history.... Postini was from 1999. Google bought it in 2007, a full decade ago. Google announced that Postini was done in 2012, half a decade ago.
That's some old stuff there!

@scottalanmiller In our early ISP days we had our own Postini rack servers for our filtering of ISP email accounts! We were grandfathered in for a long time til we discontinued providing it altogether. Eventually we switched to the Google ISP Gmail plan they probably still have.
Yeah I will check it out. Curious about this MailPlus. I wont be using it so I only somewhat care if its good. lol.

@bigbear I guess it really depends on what you and your customers need / expect from a filter. I think a large part of service evaluation/selection comes down to the nature of their email and how they choose to handle it. So obviously some services are better tailored than others. Are there must haves that your client(s) need / expect?

Requirements:
1.) email in
2.) email out
3.) works
4.) outside filteringHonestly I dont know why anyone would host their own email anymore, so I figured why not just do it anyway cause this is a cool Appliance and it looks like Gmail.
Then I can keep my O365 account and make no changes. They can move off it back into O365 later if it blows. The whole appliance with storage and MailPlus would still be less than half what I originally budgeted.
-
@bigbear The best solution might be to check out the top rated service providers on Spiceworks (sorry MangoLassie !). It's generally a good indicator of what you can expect from a service provider. Good hunting!

Canadian data security laws here - it's a right proper pain in the backside. We are not exchange experts!
-
@MattSpeller what are Canadian laws like for email?
-
We use Mimecast for our filtering needs. Works with on prem and o365, though we are still on prem right now.

They don't care about the format, only what's in it. In our case, personally identifiable information (PII) - health data basically, height, weight etc.
PII must be stored in Canada - no exceptions.
This would be a lot easier if Google / Microsoft / anyone (omfg) had storage in Canada that complied with this (no external replication to USA etc).
Microsoft is starting one in Canada for this reason but they've yet to make it so that data can be isolated to Canada only.
-
@MattSpeller @bigbear So basically you need to know what your customers want + what they might need. Then juggle the logistics of like HIPPA etc. Again it comes down to industry and what a specific customer might need.

In my SW post I said I did not use it but the reason keeping me from using it was because the backup/restore of the Synology email system did not seem easy to configure and reliable to maintain. That being said I usually use Zimbra as my opensource email system to go.
-
One thing to note about the Synology email system, while it looks like it is pretty decent, it is not free past five users.

I see we've been mentioned here so let me know if you need any help or more info on our email security service.

The Synology email server does look like it is moderately nice. If you have a good service, like The Email Laundry, handling your external connections, running your email server internally isn't so bad. I have no experience with the Synology for email handling, but it looks like it might work just fine.
