The USG price is awesome. I was not seeing it anywhere close to that online today when I was looking for one.
I'm sure pricing recently changed
https://i.imgur.com/jR5krPZ.pngI was serious on Amazon Wednesday looking at the pricing because I am proposing it to a client to replace an aging ClearOS box.
-
@JaredBusch I looked at the pricing on Wednesday as well.. it wasn't that.

LOL
Someone found MicroCenter's price and decided to match it - but only after JB posted the Microcenter picture -
Sweet. There's a Micro Centre here too. Just north of 635 on 75 Central.
What is the small white module in the upper right hand corner?

That's the "cloud key", basically a hardware device that runs the control software for all the UniFi products.

Not really worth it. for $5/month you can setup a vultr VM that will host this for you.

Why couldn't one just use that USG for the wifi controller?

Or be like me, and have it installed on my desktop at home, but not running till I need to change settings.

The USG doesn't have the controller software in it. Don't ask me why, that would only seem to make sense, at least as an option.

I was foolish and bought a Cloud Key when it was first released... so I'm just using it.

So what's special about the USG? It just looks like another router in the lineup.

It's part of Unifi, the only one that is part of that family. The others are SNMP managed.

Managed with the same console the Unifi APs are.

I'm not sure many of us have tried the USG. It may be the best security gateway type device around, but being the best in a category doesn't mean the category of product is a good way to go about things.

I think "Security Gateway" means "Firewall" here. I think you are thinking of a UTM.

Ah, yep, sure am.
-
It's definitely not a UTM.
I have one at home now.
-
Just so we're clear on terms, firewall vs UTM, the difference you all are noting is access rules vs packet inspection?
-

No, that's both firewall. Ubiquiti does that stuff.
UTM is stuff like antivirus, web filtering and other heavy not directly network things.

All firewalls do access rules and FAIAP packet inspection. Anything less and it is just a router.
