The ThinkPads generally have Ethernet, great reliability, great keyboard (+ clit mouse) and external battery (love that!).
The Thinkpads are Lenovo now right? General consensus around here is to avoid Lenovo.
Yes they are, consensus everywhere is to avoid them.

Agree with XPS, the best screen that I've ever seen!

@WrCombs Oh, that will be hard. Dell can't match your price. I agree with the thought to look for refurbished machine. You search into Asus laptops, they are not expensive. This one, for example, fits your price: ASUS E200HA-UB02-GD The hardware is not outstanding but here you can work. Of course, if you don't work with DATAs, graphic or etc.

I'm an Asus RoG fan. What are your use cases?
I got my mother one of these. It's very nice. I wish it had a touch screen. Also, she has trouble seeing the little icons on the keyboard and had to print out an enlarged picture of them. Other than that, her minecraft experience has been significantly improved.
Personally, I use a Surface Pro 4 and my wife has a 3. These devices are not our primary units, though, and I wouldn't recommend using a Surface for gaming.

I use one RoG for gaming (Win 10) and liked it so much that I got one for Linux for my work machine. So it is what runs Ubuntu and what I am on now.

@WrCombs I just come back from a Dell conference: Latitude 7480 seems to be the new gold standard for business laptops, apart from Lenovo.

You went to a Dell conference and they said the new standard is a Dell laptop. Gee, I wonder why?

No, it was a conference about servers and storage.
One of the Dell people let me try his Latitude, and I say that the new Latitude are very well made.
-
@Grey It's just my opinion on what I saw and touch in person, nothing to do with the Dell event.
Frankly, I'm not even interested in buying their servers anymore.
I still think to buy myself a Carbon X1 eventually, but those new Latitude are awesome. Just that.

Yup.
Or, maybe I'm a sysadmin from Italy that suddenly join Dell sales workforce yesterday, and now is trying to sell laptops in the US from Italy.
Seems reasonable, nay?LOL
