We just introduced public link editing of office documents in Nextcloud 11 - that is, you can share a folder with a public link and if you give it write permissions people can just click a document and edit it together with you, no accounts needed.

How useful is this, should I promote the bananas out of it or do you feel it's not worth much effort??

      See my blog

      and this yt video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iuSFKVl-xQ

EDIT: reworded "anonymous editing" to 'public link editing"... Same thing, different words 😧

Are we able to set time limits on the public link, like we are with other files?

I can think of reasons this could be good...IE: working with external third parties... but if you need somebody to be able to actually edit a document on your system, it'd probably be better to create an account on the system for them...so we can know who the last person was to edit the document...but that's just me.

I could see where public editing of documents could be useful. But I question in how many cases it would be useful. Thinking of Wikipedia, the documents there are constantly edited (for good and bad).

What use cases were you guys considering when developing this?

This is a pretty cool feature. I can see this being very useful for writing labs and stuff. Education can probably make really good use of this.

Well, I have this so often... Want someone to edit a doc quickly with me but they're not a colleague so I would have to go to our sysadmin and ask them to create an account?!?! That is crazy, we're not going to give random people accounts on our infrastructure! With this I just share a link and - works. Get the doc written, un-share link done.

Not sure that I would use it personally, but I love the idea.

@jospoortvliet This is a good feature.

I have used this with Google Docs more than once.

It is a very handy feature. I will not likely use it much, but it is awesome to have.

Exactly, it's a rare feature to use, but much appreciated when it is needed.

Does Google's option allow for no authentication before the other person is editing it at the same time as you?

I correct myself this was modified, if you set the whole file to anyone with the link can edit you don't have to have a Google account, and edits are marked as created by anonymous.

So it is apparently possible in google

Ah, thanks, I didn't know it was possible in G'docs. Well I guess they feel the pressure from the competition from MS so they're lowering the bar rather than forcing people to sign up to an account...

                                  Still we're cooler 😉 😉

Does this mean that when your done having the anonymous person make edits that you have to remember after the fact to go back and remove Anonymous access to ensure that somebody is not randomly bumping into your link and then editing your files?

Yes, you have to manually remove the permissions or it stays editable to anyone with the link.

Yes, expiration dates are only with a GSuite account and setting one removes the edit access for the people or group.
