If Veeam did do the unthinkable step of charging for this free, unlimited product.... then you just switch to something else at that time. Not a big deal. There really is no real risk.
I am thinking to have one time setup instead switching from one to another.
That's minor and could apply to anything. But using something like PDQ Deploy, how much effort is that really? It's not zero, of course, but it isn't like there is any lock in. And since the risk is universal, you can't avoid it by using another product.

As you said, because of changes don't miss good one, so according to you VEP is good one ? but as earlier you mentioned, good to have PC -> Backup Server -> NAS, so I think this one not available for Veeam on Physical Machines, right ?

Central Management options are in beta, so if you decide to go that route, you'll have central management very soon.
I was informed about Centralized Mgmt, and seems they are planning to commercialize the Free Edition too by next year, so after setting up 100 PCs by thinking it's free and don't want get shocked by commercial price, so I wanted to go with other commercial software for backup.
No way are they commercializing the free version. Where did you hear that? That's not a good reason to not do this at all. There is no way that they would pull that stunt, and if you fear that you will fear it from any vendor, so you can't use any free product. Then you are stuck using paid... and are still in the same boat. So logically, avoiding the right product today because it might not be the right product tomorrow is a worthless logical exercise because the only possible result is to use nothing.
I guess from online chat or on phone call, I asked them directly, if there is any plans for commercializing Free edition, he said yes, not sure he have good idea about that.
I think that that is a misunderstanding. It's very public that they have a commercialization of the free edition, but the free edition isn't going away. They are just making ANOTHER version, that is based on the free version, that has central management. That one is not free. They've already announced that and put it in beta. I'm 99.99% confident that you just misunderstood what they meant by commercializing the free version, they didn't mean getting rid of it. They have commercial add ons that are additional.
Okay, that would be great, if my information is wrong. Also only Central Management should not be that much expensive compared to other vendors on overall.

You are correct, the free one would not follow the PC -> backup server -> NAS solution. You'd need use another product. I don't believe that the paid version of Veeam works with physical machines (yet). It's also not currently centralized ( I don' tthink) I know if you buy the paid product, it can see the backups of the free one - so maybe you can do restores or something.. don't know haven't tried it.
-
FYI, most if not all paid products will have yearly maintenance costs - so you will be paying basically forever for it. If you buy a paid product, you should definitely pay for and maintain support/updates. If you aren't planning on doing that, then you should only look at 100% free solutions.

Not yet, but will be soon in the commercial additions.

Probably a little more, Veeam isn't cheap.

UrBackup should work here, too. Totally free.

Assuming some huge whole isn't found, why not use this? I really need to look into this one.

Doesn't have the slickest scheduling is the big thing
-
VEP does not have centralized management is the downside to that.
Even if you purchase Veeam for your Hyper-V/VMWare servers, the console can only see the jobs, not control them.

Thanks for the confirmation - I thought that's what I recalled, but having not used it.. I couldn't be sure.
Sounds like a paid version that does support it is coming. but if the new version still requires putting in a username/password for the storage location on the end device, we don't get the air gap protection talked about earlier.Anyone know how the new version will work?

I just found, Your post on Spiceworks :
Backup is one of those areas where open source is still weak. Some products, like Amanda, do a decent job but charge for components necessary to make them really useful. So while the base is open source, much of the product itself is not.
Backups are one of the few places where even I, a dedicated lover of open source, often choose commercial-only solutions.
OR, if I am going to stick to OSS, I don't use a backup system but simply write scripts to do it. -
@scottalanmiller
I am willing to go with commercial one for reliability cause (possibly perceptual license and good price).Very first point is, our workstations are not under Domain (it's different story why, I am working to bring it on).
I would like to ask you, with what would you suggest based on my requirements mentioned in my Post ?

StorageCraft, Veeam, Unitrends, Datto... lots of options.
I see, most of them you mentioned seems to be for enterprise (we are smb), virtual (we have physical machines only), backup appliance included (which could be expensive than NAS) ?
Any of these solutions will work on physical installations or virtual ones. We just make the assumption that you are running a virtual environment.
Because it's rather insane to think otherwise.
With any backup software, you'll need storage space. You could use @Rob software AetherStore (which would take the space from all of your user systems to make available for backups purposes) and something like UrBackUp.
Which is a free software solution for UrBackUp with a distributed storage solution so you didn't have to purchase an onsite NAS. From the newly created AetherStore Storage you could then push that offsite so you have the 3-2-1 rule for backups.
-
@openit; You can't have it both ways. . . . you can't say that a NAS is expensive, and then that you only want to pay for an enterprise backup solution.
Most if not all "enterprise" backup solutions will really demand that you use an enterprise backup target.
You also mentioned that you were looking for a 1-time payment solution, which I'm sure there are some, but what kind of support are you getting with those? 1 Year's worth maybe, email only, non-critical 24-hour response window.
Would be my guess....
So you have to make some adjustments, you're asking for the entire sky, but demanding some odd "needs".

@openit said in PCs Backup software that can isolate backup destination to protect from Ransomware virus.:
Dear all,
Looking for backup software for Windows environment with following requirements:
-
Software that can isolate backup destination to protect from ransom-ware so that PC got infected will not effect backup target.
-
Software can take snapshot or system image.
-
Of course schedule backup and data retention option.
-
Centralized Management.
-
Good price, of course:)
The backup destination will be NAS box and we got around 100 PCs.
I prefer perpetual(one time payment) license.
Thanks all !
So above is your original post. Lets bullet out what you want and need.
-
Backup isolation. Every centrally managed backup solution can do this, with detatched storage from the host/server. UrBackUp does this and is free. (There is a paid support version as well)
-
Most solutions can do this, and offer a ISO to reinstall from the last image taken. UrBackUp also does this, and is offered for free.
-
Any backup solution worth paying for has scheduling and retention. UrBackUp has this.
-
UrBackUp runs from a server, and has a Web Console so while centrally managed, the jobs can be viewed from any system with access to the web server address.
-
UrBackUp has both free, and paid options.

He said it was for PCs in the original post. I figured he was talking physical desktops (or laptops). People don't tend to call servers PCs, even though they are too. I was assuming physical in every response.

I really think that Veeam Endpoint Backup is likely the way to go. As @JaredBusch pointed out, the risk of compromise through ransomware, while important to consider, does not exist today and planning around it is foolish. If you are backing up to NAS, just snapshot to protect against that. The product is commercial, enterprise and completely free and that's not going to change in any reasonable future.
Use PDQ Deploy and you can roll it out quickly and easily to your entire fleet without needing Active Directory.
