Earlier the better, but you don't need loads of lead time. Amtrak has a nice app for your phone, too.

I'm thinking through what my travel schedule would look like for this. The last day of the conference is the 28th. Does the conference last the entire day on the 28th? If so, then I'd plan my return trip to be on the 29th.

Definitely don't leave that night. We conference all day and then social stuff all night.
