Has anyone made the drive from Toronto to Rochester? I'm probably flying to Toronto for a couple of days before MC17, and will probably rent a car and drive around the lake (~3 hours).
Ah yes, Toronto, and the almost completely unused highway. It's the only place I know of that put in a toll route, but the tolls only apply to local people. The drive isn't bad, the worst part is the stop at customs/immigration.
I figured the border would be the only sticky wicket, and it looks like a nice, scenic drive.

I have made that may times. There are TONS of Wineries on that route to stop and check out. However please do not get a DWI in-between there and Rochester.
The trip along the lake is pretty but it's also rather boring. You can also make a stop to see Niagara Falls as well.

Texas for the longest time was huge tolls and only for locals. Actually, that might still be the case.

Lots of us have. We used to do it just for dinner. I've done that drive asleep (literally slept and woke up on the other side of the border!!) I know the drive well.

If you've got the time, stop and see Niagra Falls from the Canadian side, much better view.

Keep in mind while that is a big region for wine, it is not a quality region for wine. It's a bulk "sweet new world" wine region and not considered a valuable export wine. If you want wines from that general area, you avoid the Great Lakes and go for the Finger Lakes where normal table wines like in Europe are grown. The GL wine region does not grow vinefera.

Used to be not a big deal. These days, probably a bit more of a pain.

The border can be a huge pain getting into the US these days. Into Canada is very easy.

Hi all
I am back!
Looking at the ticket rates now. The cheapest I could find is from DXB to JFK and thinking about driving as mentioned by @scottalanmiller from JFK to ROC (5 hours). DXB to JFK is $1209.91
https://i.imgur.com/nqO09ZE.pngCheaper than DXB direct to ROC ( Chepest- Egypt Air $1990.74 and $2020.15 for Air France) I guess with DXB to JFK and then a rent a car would still be cheaper. Suggestions please. But then i need to come back to JFK to end the trip (Unless there is a rent a car system where i can drop the car on a different location!)
Turkish airlines really tempting, but worried about the issues they had recent attacks!
-
@Ambarishrh Better to be safe man. It's tough, but you'd lose a lot more time in your life if you're dead.

Ataturk is probably the safest airport in the world. It's the only one that had attacks that they were able to repel them. Their security was so good that the bombers didn't even make it into the airport. There is no airport in the US that comes close to the security there. Five checkpoints before the plane, including metal detectors before you enter the airport itself. You chose Turkish because of security, not in spite of it.

That's actually a reason that I prefer that airport. It doesn't just appear safe, it's the only one that had a terrorist attack that failed.

Due to the competency of the airport or the incompetency of the terrorists?

Given the @scottalanmiller has travelled number of times through this airport, i am leaning towards this. Read some more info and most of that says high alert in areas near Syria

And the chances of someone trying again are low, because it is already been hit, and because it was hit and failed and because it is so high profile that the security around it is crazy. Tanks always at hand!

I'd listen to Scott. He's travelled a hell of a lot more than I have, that's for sure.

Competency of the airport. One of the few that has security to approach the airport. They caught the bombers trying to get to the airport on the outside. Same security that the US has halfway through the airport. I thought that Mexico City was secure, but Ataturk puts it to shame. I prefer Ataturk for my family specifically because of safety.

So your advice would be to proceed? Its actually way cheaper! If i compare it with Emirates airlines/Qatar Turkish airlines is really cheap, and i guess i heard good things about the flight from your previous posts too!
