Beginning in October 2016, both older operating systems will receive a cumulative rollup patch available each and every month via Windows Update. What Microsoft is doing is making updates to Windows 7 and 8.1 much easier and similar to how it handles Windows 10 updates.

I like the idea, but having to wait an entire month to receive those updates seems like it creates a bigger window for people to break in using an unannounced security hole.

I've seen a lot of people complaining that there have so many small patches break things that this will cause support problems for them.

I should pull the local repair shop owners in here, you'd never hear the end of it.

Ha! Yeah, why do patch updates only seem to affect consumers and SMBs?
