Just found out my office is slated to be closed on Monday & Tuesday thanks to Hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, IT Staff are considered essential personnel, and we are on call.
Just remember to laugh a little when you get the call that someone can't VPN into your network hours after you learn your building's been destroyed by the hurricane.
<operator tones> We're sorry, the building you are trying to reach has been demolished. Please hang up and call your IT Personnel or try your call again later. <click>

Um.... yeah and your life is more important than staying in the hurricanes path!
I'd tell management, sure I'll be on call. From New York!

Yeah. Boss said if you're worried about it, just say it, and no harm no foul. Gotta say the magic words to keep the Govt watchdogs and management at bay.
But they don't expect us to risk life and limb to keep a server up. We're in central Georgia (about 50 miles northeast of Macon).
It's expected that it'll reach Savannah as a Cat 1, and then travel on inland a bit. Most likely, it will be a tropical storm when it gets to us, but who can say. Gas shortages have already started happening, lol.

Listening to chirps and such on HF - this is what is decoded:
WeFAX image
Is it the best - god no... but that came from a 4kW transmitter down in Louisiana And if you stare at it long enough,.. you can figure most of it out.
How far away from you is that transmitter in Louisiana?
Between 600 and 700 miles.
I'm going to see if I can pick up Boston and California as well.. I mean - why not.
-
@gjacobse One of these days I hope to be back on HF. Alas, kids and other priorities, like renewing my companies wildcard SSL certificate and finding all the services using it!

I'm grateful for the time - sparse as it is - during the day to get it setup (at least for WeFAX) and let it sit and run... I don't talk much on HF,.. I spend more time on the digital modes than voice, and don't do any CW.

What's everyone's fav Linux Distro for desktop usage?
(Going to Dual boot my laptop)I'm loving Deepin right now. Not without a few odd issues.
Korora was nice. Firefox has a memory leak and they've not updated recently even though Fedora updated.
Gecko is nice.
Mint remains a really solid choice.
Straight Fedora and Tumbleweed are really good.

Just bought another Vultr instance to load Pi Hole
Nice! Keep in mind it runs great in a container as well.
Not many places offering containers.
All apps run in containers. Apps can't tell when they are virtualized or your virtualization is broken.

In a dire pinch, I would still do this. Otherwise, I would just ship it out to a data recovery place and let them do what they're best at.

The real issue is how they got into this position, not that they do something crazy and desperate.

I heard that if you sing to them, they spin faster. I swear it works.
