Of course this means the copy (of the proper data) will take a while.

Where is everyone this morning? Man this place is slow.
I brought in donuts.
I like you.

How often do we hear "We can save you money" and the answer is "oh no, money is too tight, we can't save money right now."
Really?

Actually - I have a story for that - We have a printer that we'll save money on it's TCO if we replace it with a new model. It would require some capital spend today though, and that's what's keep us from replacing it.

In this case, they are looking at investing MORE now, to lose MORE later. No savings, anywhere.

Raid 50? Why?
Because it is 10x better than RAID 5?

What we don't know is the anticipated budget. I have a feeling that someone thinks they are going to be able to skate by with a $1-5000 investment/fix.

For buying a new storage array AND a new high availability switching cluster? I think even they realize that they are spending $25K - $60K.

Something else we don't know - how many blades are in the two chassis he has? If they are fully loaded, he might need more than two VM hosts, but probably not.
-
Regarding the discussion of his need for HA - Perhaps they do need it (though probably not), even though they don't have it now, they might never have realized they didn't have it because they might have never experienced an issue that would have called up the HA to save them. So in their minds - crazy I know - they might think they have it (well we could place pretty good odds that they think they have it).

Doesn't matter much, blades are slower than normal servers and these are eight year old blade chassis! Even full, they'd not have all that much power.

Right BUT, they just stated that what they have is good enough. So no matter what, they've accepted the state of things. So a single server is an improvement. Doesn't matter if they think that they need HA or not, a single server is an improvement over what they are saying is what they are happy with.

They stated that the current stat is good enough - (I have to toss in an assumption here) because they believe that they have HA.
Let me ask this - if they had real HA, and it never failed, and they told you that what they had was good enough, would you leave them on HA or would you propose dropping HA? huh, just asking that seems stupid for some reason.

@scottalanmiller said in What Are You Doing Right Now:
10% of all SW posts are something like "how would you deal with this situation" and it is always someone asking something that sounds semi-reasonable until you dig into it and realize that every answer is the same: "find the person in charge, let them know of the issue, do your job as directed." Essentially every SMB IT "how do I deal with this" question I see comes down to the same issue of an IT employee not liking a situation or event, trying to take ownership of something they are not responsible for and trying to figure out how to deal with it when, the real issue is, they are overstepping their bounds and are not letting the chain of command make decisions.
This is just basic employment. What is it about SMB IT that makes people feel like the chain of command is no longer applicable?
I can't upvote this post enough. SO TRUE. I'm surprised you say only 10%, to be honest.

In which case, believing that they have HA is good enough for them. The point is, there are two choices... what they have now, or something better that costs less. That one is HA and one is not, that someone believes in something or someone does not, aren't factors.
