Fedora
Why?
A big reason is I work with Red Hat stuff every day. I really like the tools they've integrated into everything.

Different ones for different tasks. Mint and OpenSuse are my favorite desktops. CentOS and Leap are my favorite servers.
I thought you like OpenSUSE for servers, or was that just for file sharing servers?
That's what Leap is.
-
I guess I should specify though. I have Fedora on my laptop, but my servers run CentOS. I have a couple Ubuntu servers but that's for the Ubiquiti stuff. I've used CentOS as a workstation and I loved it, it was rock solid. I may switch back to that at some point. I was using FreeCAD for a while and I don't need it any more (one of the main reasons I switched to Fedora).

Only ever really messed with Mint.. im sure i will play with them all eventually!

Yup. OpenSuse Leap is the server release of OpenSuse.

Have you used Fedora 24 workstation ? I just installed it on a VM (4 GB RAM, 50GB HDD, 2 Cores), and I wasn't too impressed ... Just seemed a tad laggy ... I know, it shouldn't be ... I installed it from the Live Image .. dunno, what I did wrong .. shall I try one from Fedora Spins, perhaps ?
Anyway, my fav distro has to be Debian ... It's the distro (Lenny and then squeeze), I've actually used the longest, as a desktop .. It just works for me ..
On the server side, I prefer CentOS... Zentyal too ... technically Zentyal is also a Linux server distro ,since it runs atop Ubuntu
-
My true favorite is going to be Ubuntu... But my Laptop is currently running OpenSuSE Tumbleweed.

That's what I have on my laptop and I haven't noticed any lag. However I have 8GB RAM and an SSD
Gnome 3 requires hardware acceleration so that might be where you're seeing the issue. If you switch to Mate it will be much faster.

If you feel lag, that's because it's a VM without GPU passthrough. That's what that is 100% of the time. And it's the desktop choice, not the distro, that causes that.
-
I don't really know that I have a favorite. I use Ubuntu the most, but I hold no loyalties.
-
I'm posting from Ubuntu 16.04.1 and it's okay, but it's no Mint. But it installs on this laptop, so it is what it is.

You can still install Cinnamon / Mate, etc... If you haven't done that already.

I only choose Ubuntu for my desktop installs because it is quick, easy, and what most of my Engineers prefer/standardize things on. If I really wanted to put time and effort into it I would probably go with Mint or OpenSUSE. Right now, and until I get the time to put some serious study into powershell, I spend 90%+ time inside a terminal multiplexer accessed via a Putty session to one of my jump boxes. I might touch a Linux desktop once every couple weeks? As long as I have a working Firefox or Chrome browser I'm generally content.

I have... and Cinnamon on Ubuntu isn't nearly what it is on Mint. Putting Cinnamon on Ubuntu really showcases how much it is lacking. It's far more than I realized. Mint is so much better... when it installs.

I've installed this on my laptop, as VM, running on VMware Workstation. So, I don't think GPU passthrough option is available (??)
Anyway, it's a lot lot better, after I bumped-up the RAM from 4GB to 6GB, and installed VMware Tools...

I got GPU passthrough working for Windows 10 on VirtualBox. It might be.

General purpose: Debian/Ubuntu and CentOS
Favorite: Gentoo -

You DID get GPU Passthrough working in Windows 10 on VirtualBox? Do tell!

I do not have linux on the desktop at the moment. looking at getting Mint going maybe.
My server OS of choice is CentOS. It was a really simple decision.
I got into the Linux side of things via the Asterisk PBX path back in 2006 or so. All of the distros have always been based on CentOS.
I've never been bothered to deal with doing anything else.
