@scottalanmiller oh okay. I understand. I will in the future, budget is currently tight. didnt have much of an option. I just moved to this place and had to get my own router so i just got a decent one and am trying to get it up

It's purely up to you, it's not a technical thing, just how to do router learning when you want to do advanced things and might need to go offline while doing it. Nothing scarier (to me) than the thing that you are working on being the thing that keeps you from getting additional help resources.
Getting the unit that you have working shouldn't be bad. While at work, get the latest update downloaded from UBNT and have it on a USB stick to deploy to the router when you get home.

Once you update, the wizard is very in your face.

This thread confused me. Why isn't he just factory resetting it and starting from scratch? You get the internet up and running then download the firmware update + install it. Once that completes you can start setting up your VLANs. Or did I miss a crucial post or something

@cteneyck The wizard will set eth0 as your WAN, and you will have options to setup eth1 as a LAN as well as eth2 as a second LAN and turn on the default firewall.
You will want to use the WAN+2LAN2 wizard.
Setup the WAN appropriately for your situation. DHCP in my case.
Do not enable bridging. It does nothing but slow down the router's preformance. Not that a home office would notice.
eth1 will be your LAN, configure as desired.
eth2 will something you can setup later. ignore it for now.

As a side note unrelated to the actual setup: Anytime I have to setup a VLAN (which is rare honestly) I map out the ports I want on each switch and have ranges labeled for specific purposes. If printers are on VLAN 91, then that applies to Ports 40-48, etc. It really helps you locate things faster when you are in a pinch. I also have different colored cat5e cables for each type of device in my closet. Purple is Pyxis. Red is video. Grey is PC. Green is printer. Etc. Organization is key when networking imo.
This is another thing I need to do here. Unfortunately none of the cabling is labeled here. It's insanity.

You missed the part where he plugged in original firmware and never even looked at upgrading it first.

UPDATE:
This is just a copy and paste from my message to SAM btwI got the firmware updated on all my devices and I got my network up. Not like I want though.
So I had it working with VLANS(as in DHCP, DNS, and routing were working), but then i had issues because my AP (10.0.10.2) couldnt connect to the desk(which is the wireless controller) which is 10.0.20.2
It had something to do with L3 integration on the AP, and I spent 9 hours on the support with Ubiquiti. They basically told me to wait for the next patch for the L3 support.
So i had to remove my vlans and just have a flat network. :((((
So with tagging vlans, i have a question:
the ports you tag on are the "trunks" in cisco terms?On my switch, what i did is i tagged ports 1, and 8
1 is the AP, and then 8 is the switch->router port
I did this on both vlan 10 and vlan 20
this makes it so that if vlan 20 traffic goes to the wireless it will actually work correct?I have a TPLink SG108PE.
It can do 802.1Q Vlanning. I have 8 ports and you can assign a PVID per port, and also assign which ports are tagged and untagged.Port 1 goes to my AP, so it will be be a "trunk" in cisco terms.
Port 8 goes to the router, so it will be to be a "trunk"Ports 3-7 will be vlan 20, and
port 2 will be 10Wired is vlan 20
wireless is vlan 10Am I correct in that ports 1 and 8 need to be tagged for both vlan 10 and 20, and that they are untagged for 2-7?
Am I correct in that ports 3-7 will have a PVID of 20, and port 2 will have a PVID of 10?
Am i correct in that ports 1 and 8 will have a PVID of 1 (the default)?
