What was your FIRST IT job? And how did you get it?
-
I was a file clerk for a local car dealership, and happened to be answering an IT related question as the IT administrator was walking in.
Was given a job in that department the following day.

no It job really, however i did help my dad and my uncle with some things growing up.. reinstalling OS, updating OS, finding breach points for virus' , and containing virus'
Nothing further other than a few part changes and building family desktops. -
The question was a rather simple one;
"What's the difference if I leave it open and click the minimize button versus closing it?"

Nothing further other than a few part changes and building family desktops. You are on the right track, then! Any interest in getting into IT as a career, or is it more of a hobby for you?

Was the receptionist for Digital Computer Corporation and hung out with the Helpdesk team a lot. Started learning how to do bench services and basic office troubleshooting.
That's cool! I have an office services bg/copy boy kinda thing. Never imagined to be working in IT 8 years later

Made some warehouse management software when I was 14, during summer holiday

I dove right in as a helpdesk guy for Rockwell Automation just as I got out of highschool.

Man! Is it still in use to this day? Did you continue doing software development?

I wonder how many people fall into IT from a development background. Seems like a logical step for some people.

Yeah, it does. Not all of us... but a lot of us. I actually started out as a Turbo Pascal / VB for DOS developer.

The company closed its doors 10 years ago or so, but they used it up to that point as far as I know.
I'm still a developer for the most part, but also an admin (I would say 70/30). Jack of all trades, embedded, Linux, BSD, Windows, you name it.

When I was in college we had a computer "lab" for the Electrical Tech dept (lab in quites of you coudl call 2 non-networks computers a lab I guess) They were always breaking down and I was fixing them up on my own. My dad was a computer hobbiest so I had access to magazines (at the time) like PC Magazine, Computer!, Computer Shopper (remember those? as big as a phone book!) so that was actually how I learned about computers, reading and fixing up the lab stuff. After I graduated I applied to Ingram Micro for their call center thinking I was going to sales but was interviewed by one of the tech support managers. I ended up getting hired, had 3 days of training then thrown to the wolves on the phones every day. Picked up quite a bit and learned both Customer Service skills and tech skills as I went along

I took a test at a local major hospital and was hired as an Anaesthesia tech in the operating room (trained on the job). After 2 years an IT position opened up. At that point I was building my own arcade sticks and had just finished an Arduino LED controller. I brought it with me into the interview and explain how I did it. I was hired on the spot.

trying things out, seeing what makes my mind jump up and down like a kid with a bunch of sugar whos about to watch his favorite movie ( i say this, because my almost 2 year old son, who was hanging out with his grandma earlier, is hyped up on sugar and as i was turning his favorite movie on, he was jumping up and down and had the biggest smile on his face) and see what i love about it! Thats why im on this site, see how everyone reacts to each other and so on. also not to mention, I started my NTG internship yesterday.

@WrCombs Congratulations! That is an excellent opportunity. Everyone I have interacted with from NTG has been extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Happy to count them among my friends now.
