The devices that are compatible with SlingBox are:
AppleTV
ChromeCast
FireTV
And RokuDoes he have AppleTV already? If not, I wouldn't say go buy one, unless he wanted it. Roku should work just fine.
I am quite familiar with how Slingbox works as I have had one for 4 years. It is connected to a DVR in Japan at my in-laws house.
AppleTV does not now, nor has it ever supported Slingbox.
If you actually read that page you linked, you will see that none of the devices except maybe the FireTV\FireStick support the Slingbox natively. The rest support it only through Airplay/casting to the device from the mobile app.
Those methods are not as simple using a remote, which is my goal for this.
If he wants to use a remote for this to access the SlingBox remotely, why not just setup a computer with the slingbox address bookmarked and get a compatible remote over HDMI to any TV.
Problem solved.

Remote over HDMI? You mean HDMI-CEC? That does not help with control that I am aware of? Haven't used the more recent version though.
Using a computer means using a mouse remotely. Definitely not problem solved.

For the record, I have not sold him on anything. The point is to find out what else may be possible that I am not already aware of. That is why communities like this exist.

No, you're missing the point. You'd get a tiny single board computer like a Pi or something else, small but functional. Get a compatible remote / touchpad mouse (maybe keyboard) right on it.
The computer you configure to leave a compatible browser open and on the slingbox address.
Sign in and cache the credentials, and be done with it.

@DustinB3403 Oh wait, because you've probably sold him on "it can be done with a single device"
Prick.
Good luck
As usual, you have personal issues. Have fun with that.

And my issue with you is how every time I offer you advice, you get snarky with me.

I said you were wrong, likely because you failed to read the page you linked. There is no snark there.

Seriously people......

Maybe connect a tablet that supports the software natively using some wireless hdmi adapter?
The tablet would be the remote.

Yes, a tablet casting to the TV is the plan if nothing better can be figured out. It is how Slingbox seems to prefer things. Just trying to look outside the box.

@JaredBusch I was referring to an actual wireless hdmi transmitter like https://www.amazon.com/Nyrius-Transmitter-Streaming-Projector-NPCS549/dp/B009E6R89C assuming you are trying to stay away from tablet casting.
Downside for sure is the relatively large transmitter and cost. But if he doesn't have an existing tv that supports casting that is an alternative.
