@Obsolesce said in Apple Mac Going to ARM RISC: @scottalanmiller said in Apple Mac Going to ARM RISC: RISC-V is seen as the future with more modern and more open design than ARM and zero security risks like ARM has. ARM is so risky, I'd never risk (pun intended) developing something new with it, only something old. Oh yeah, forgot about that! Still very low end devices, but moving up fast. I'm really excited to see the first SBCs and desktops built off of it.

Yeah I got an announcement in my email about it. I was reading about it here: https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2019/12/announcing-new-amazon-ec2-m6g-c6g-and-r6g-instances-powered-by-next-generation-arm-based-aws-graviton2-processors

I hope some big names, like SuperMicro, take this seriously and get something in our hands soon. This would be perfect for two socket 1U servers or some tiny blade units (those SM deals with four blades in a 2U kind of thing.)

@DustinB3403 said in Asus Tinker Board Takes on the Raspberry Pi 3: I would actually invest a decent chunk of money into SBC if the use cases weren't so fringe. (at least for me they are) Raspian doesn't really do much for me, I suppose I need to find a decent use for these and then I'd use em. But otherwise they're really low cost computers with an odd use case. Debian and Ubuntu, I believe, are already set on this board.

@scottalanmiller While my main drive wasn't to get the rPi to learn some basic programming, I am hoping that it will help 'encourage' it. I am planning to load Linux on my laptop as the primary, and take it from there. But I also am pushing myself to use the CLI more in the rPi than before..

I think that efforts like what HPE and Dell have been doing to get very high density, very low cost ARM "blades" into the datacenter is where it is going to be. And that there will either be loads of hypervisor management used to push out workloads or something similar that does this for bare metal much like Ubuntu's MaaS (Metal as a Service) to get the ARM blades to act as much like VM hosts as possible.

@scottalanmiller said in First Look at the NVidia Shield TV: @IRJ said in First Look at the NVidia Shield TV: It seems like that is just a list of android games. There are a handful of Android TV only titles, but nearly everything that runs on Android TV also runs on Android, but not the other way around. Well not all Android apps run on Adroid TV, but actually most of them do work if you sideload them. Sometimes the controls can get lost if the apps only work for touch screen devices. I have sideloaded alot of apps and most android apps do work on Android TV.

Good point. I don't particularly doubt that it is there, just don't want to count unhatched chickens, you know? HP used to sell Proliants with the built in virtualization disabled via BIOS. Not that IBM would pull that, but without knowing that the feature is there for sure, it's something to look into.

@scottalanmiller said: You would have thought. Mobile and RT could easily have been one and the same. They are for iOS and Android! I was reading about the large amount of turnover lately in the desktop area in MS and these things be split was one of them. I hope this means we'll see them get on a better path.

@ajstringham said: Would they look a little and feel a lot different on a touchscreen device? Yes. But for initial stages that would be awesome. What benefit do you see to Android on a non-handheld device? It's a handheld focused OS. It's purpose is mobility. Putting it on a desktop just seems like a horrible desktop experience. What's the draw?
