But that means that you can run the lighter 32bit OS version that is faster AND it is already overclocked and includes a massive passive heatsink.

But the web browser plus whatever else is running in addition to the OS will still eat up what's left of the RAM pretty easily I would think. My phone uses more than 4g of ram easily.

Not really. It's actually hard to use up the 4GB RAM on the RPI4 as a normal user. Remember that everything running on it is lean, like LXDE for example.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/raspberry-pi-4-8gb-tested

I'd say that if you're happy with the RPI4 performance as a desktop then there's a 95% chance that 4GB RAM will be enough.

If you're a power user then RPI4 is too slow and you'll probably looking at something with at least 16GB RAM anyway.

This is why I like the RP400. It's the CPU, more than the RAM, that is the bottleneck for use and the RP400 is like 15% faster.

      Just for reference (mine) what are you using the rPi for? I have two rPi 3b+ and 1 rPi Zero running currently;

rPi 3b+ running Diet-Pi hosting APCups, CUPS, and Unifi Controller rPi 3b+ running Raspbian for HamRadio activies (using Build-A-Pi found on YouTube) rPi Zero - DMR radio hotspot (transceiver to internet gateway)

Still could use one or two more

      Desktops

I would go with the rPi 4 as a desktop... bit more power and more memory..

That's the first model that offers a real desktop option. No one has suggested trying anything else.

      RP4 with 4GB of RAM

The problem with Pi (and frankly a lot of the low end ARM) is these things have incomplete UEFI bios etc. You currently need to really be working on one of the distro's designed for it (Which is likely fine for your use case). ARM and our engineers are working on this though..

Good point. Definitely an issue. Ubuntu, which is what we use, does make for them at least.

Hey if your bussiness can use LibreOffice, you dont need MS Windows. Or google Docs, basically if you can do your job via terminal and web browser you have alot of options and freedom

Thanks Emad but I'm not the one looking for VDI solutions. I just wanted to share my test with the raspberry pi 4 is it might be interesting to use as a thin client.

Something extra nice about an RP4 as a thin client is that it has the power to run things locally too. I know lots of people who use them as a fat clients. Being that cheap and dual purpose is great.

This version 4 feels snappy, like you are running on a "real" computer.
But storage speed is more like an old harddrive compared to a modern server with SSD drives. To bad they didn't put a SATA or something on it.

Serving up some pages on apache or nginx is no problem. Ansible installs fine. Packages in Raspbian seems to be just about the entire Debian repository for whatever odd thing you want.

It's for sure the best Raspberry Pi so far. Can be used for a lot more things than the old version 3.

I look forward to getting one fo these and seeing if it can now run Netflix/Crunchyroll better. The Pi3 could not do it well.

      Please post after your test.
