I use RevelPOS our retail business. Had it for about 7 years now. It’s ok. Uses iPads.

I’d probably do Clover if I had to do it over again but it’s too much of a PITA to switch now.

I've heard mixed things about Revel though - We have an iPad based system that used to be "Bite Squad" but now it's called HRPOS and I have mixed feelings about it.

Does it work for you pretty well? you said in Retail, have you used it in Hospitality before?

I can't recall ever seeing a switch "back in the day" that didn't have ASICs. There are a few newer switches that do, in fact, use CPU rather than ASICs, but they're built using MUCH faster CPUs than what are included in most -- if not all -- routers.

Early days, the ASICs didn't even exist yet. It wasn't a choice, it was all that there was to use software. Then the ASICs came along and obviously dominated. But yes, it always requires throwing more hardware at it.

How far back are we going here? My first experience with a switch was with Alantec/FORE ATMs (circa early 91/2). These had a RISC SCP processor to run the OS/management functions and custom ASICs for switching. After that, in the more mainstream, came Kalpana and then Cisco. To the best of my knowledge, there were no switches available prior to thicknet (first commercial ethernet).

I'd love more information if you have it available. I love the history of tech.

Not that far back, still 90s, but a lot of switches were all software in the middling to later 90s as the ASICs weren't broadly available.

But even the very, very first ASICs were / are always based on working software prototypes.

I've never seen a thicknet switch, what a freaking mess that must be.

I'm sure there's some degree that it's different, because Tablets memory and Storage is no where close to a Desktop PC. but it the OS runs the exact same.

The fastest computer in my house is a tablet. Intel i7 9th gen, 16GB RAM, NVMe storage. Way faster than any of our laptops or desktops.

Tablet is just a shape and while they can't contain the power of a giant gaming rig, they can do anything a laptop or normal business desktop can do. It's literally just the shape.

@Dashrender said in Windows 10- Cant Connect to this network?:

I have seen specific devices have a hard time getting/staying connected. My old Lenovo laptop had this issue. Replacing the wireless NIC solved the problem. Others I've updated the driver and it solved, and yet others never resolved. Recommended solutions at that point were - replace the AP, replace the laptop/device.

I didn't mention updating the AP, but I suppose that should be mentioned.

Agreed, this is more likely to be hardware or driver related, than to be Windows 10 related.

@WrCombs said in How to set up Unifi Controller For Unrouted Private Network?:

    update:
    L6U1LJA.png
The tablet connects to the Network, with a Static IP of 192.168.128.103
the Ip of the AP is showing as 192.168.2.41 ..

    But it is connected..
    is that normal??

sure, it can be. All depends on the routing.

I assume you have the AP connected somehow to the second port on the ER-L, and that it's getting DHCP from that, but that same switch also has a connection to the secondary NIC in your Server, so the static IP'ed traffic can get around on that. You've kinda created a bridge between the networks via the AP, and if the password is the default, that could be a problem.

    password is not default.

In theory, you could even update the firmware on the UAP, in the future, by pre-downloading it on a device that presents it via a URL and then join that device to the aloha network.

But that would be excessive amounts of work.

Possibly the app could do it on an iPhone/Android device with LTE that is also joined to the aloha wifi.

A ghost ship is when a ship (at sea) has lost its crew but doesn't sink and keeps on drifting. Software shops will often make software and keep selling it for years or decades after the "crew" who made it have left the company and the company can no longer maintain or update it (which often remains can't fully support). This is why client server software often exists... it was actually made by someone in the 1990s who has left and the company keeps selling it, but they can't modernize it because they don't have the skills remaining in house to work on the software.

We have a lab set up, I will be using that serial capture that @scotth gave me based on @Pete-S suggestion.
We'll see what we can find and try to fix.
    thanks for the input.

@WrCombs If you're using serial / RS232, I'm guessing that your driver might be outputting in ASCII and might need to be set to ANSI or from 8 bit to 7 bit. Check these against other sites and see what you come up with. The repeated characters are representations of solid lines or simple graphics via the various protocols.

At least I've run into this before with a telnet app that we use here.

QS in my thread was meant to be Intel's feature, Quick Sync. I generally only use acronyms in the context of that thread, or if they are used industry wide. If there is doubt, I tend to stay away and just spell it out.

Exactly - I could see the use of QS in your thread becuase you mentioned Quick Sync in a previous post.

But if William is talking about servers - and doens't spell out that he's talking about people each and every time, there are just going to be problems. Now - it's possible that context will make the need to spell this out unnecessary, but expecting people in an ebbing and flowing community like this to read this OP and just know what William is talking about, yeah.. I wouldn't expect it to work.

That was a main reason for this post.. But, Can I ask Why you are using my full name?

I go by Will since the 6th Grade.. Looks weird seeing my full name plastered all over LOL

Makes me feel like I'm in trouble... LOL

Sorry - cause we've never called you Will? and your handle wasn't on the screen and I couldn't remember you screen name 😛

LOL I guess you're right. You guys never have called me Will.
Maybe on Facebook cause that's my name there.

LOL i dont have to ask Jono.. I'm sure I already know what he's going to say.
