@Obsolesce said in Apple Mac Going to ARM RISC: @scottalanmiller said in Apple Mac Going to ARM RISC: RISC-V is seen as the future with more modern and more open design than ARM and zero security risks like ARM has. ARM is so risky, I'd never risk (pun intended) developing something new with it, only something old. Oh yeah, forgot about that! Still very low end devices, but moving up fast. I'm really excited to see the first SBCs and desktops built off of it.

@JaredBusch said in Running Filebeat on ARM: @FiyaFly said in Running Filebeat on ARM: Take a look at what the system comes with. From a quick check, I'm almost certain both CentOS and Fedora ship with rsyslog, which would lead me to believe that the Pi would have that or something very similar. If not, rsyslog does at least have an ARM package. Pi runs Debian. Yeah, I don't have any debian-based systems I can check right now, but I know it still has the mechanism built-in. Just might not be rsyslog.

@pete-s said in ARM Desktop I Finally Want: Add $30 for 4GB of memory and you're at the same price as the board you mentioned but with 2-3 times the performance of the rockchip. The J3455 is an older NUC so it can only take 8GB RAM. Well that's at least $160 vs. $129. But a bigger deal is power consumption, I think. I'd like to see the numbers, but I bet that the RC is dramatically lower.

Here is the current Mac Pro, the top of the line system: https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/ Honestly, it's not impressive. This is not "power" hardware by any stretch. The price is high, but the gear in it is lackluster. They've not released a "power" product since 2013, what they released then was this which is pretty hampered, and they don't plan to update it until 2019 at the earliest. It's not hard at all to see how an ARM-based system might compete really, really well here. Apple's "power user" hardware isn't on par with power users from the rest of the industry as it stands today and their refresh cycles are absurd so that anyone in their "power users club" has to already feel totally abandoned under the current model of things.

Would be pretty sweet to test something like SodiumSuite on this. Probably not good for the database, but could be really neat to see how the application front end would run there.

If you want to buy one which one interests you. Thanks. Raspberry Pi3 for thermostat and Arduino for door automation. Why I am getting the vibe here that it is easier to code and automate with Arduino , is there an easy guide/wizard for it that does not involve alot of coding ? Arduino is microprocessor coded with a specific dialect of c as most of micros todays. It is not able to run an os. Like any micro it accepts an entry point and starts looping the same code again and again until you pull the plug. Raspberrypi is an arm architecture able to run an os. You can code it even in python or node.js

I hope some big names, like SuperMicro, take this seriously and get something in our hands soon. This would be perfect for two socket 1U servers or some tiny blade units (those SM deals with four blades in a 2U kind of thing.)

Put 4G in there and I'd be very interested. 2GB, and I just don't really care. The ancient Android version doesn't thrill me, either. This doesn't seem like they are taking it very seriously.

@SamsungTX Good info, thanks! That would work for me. But we'll have to go to a store so she can hold it in her hand to see if it will be a good fit. (personally, I'd probably prefer the S8+) We use T-Mobile, they've been great and the best for us so far, so no plans on switching... especially if they keep improving things like they seem to be. For me, I prefer Windows Mobile... as my mobile use focus is on convenience (not sure how familiar you are with Win10 Mobile, but it's brilliant) and working seamlessly with my Win10 laptop. My ideal solution or phone fantasy, would be the S8+ running Win10 Mobile! I doubt that will happen, so I'm waiting to see what happens with the "surface phone". But I am all about the S8 for my wife if it's a good fit after trying it out.

@DustinB3403 said in Asus Tinker Board Takes on the Raspberry Pi 3: I would actually invest a decent chunk of money into SBC if the use cases weren't so fringe. (at least for me they are) Raspian doesn't really do much for me, I suppose I need to find a decent use for these and then I'd use em. But otherwise they're really low cost computers with an odd use case. Debian and Ubuntu, I believe, are already set on this board.
