That applies if you aren't planning on using the other stuff the Dream Machine is capable of. It's a single device that can manage all of your AP's, Security Cameras, Door Access and soon VoIP. Depending on the use I would think it would be worth it provided you are getting the functionality you want out of it.
That's sounding like a great product for the home, I'll have to keep my eye on them.

The free Unifi controller already does that. That a FREE piece of functionality is shoved onto your router does not improve it in any way, whatsoever.

Frankly, I kinda hate these kinds of products, because they aren't great for anyone. Sure they might work for a min, but once they break, those every day people are left holding the bag and are pissed.

You are acting like this is providing some kind of value that you don't already have without the Dream Machine. It's not. It's just marketing using the emotional response to bundling make you feel like you should pay for something you already have.
Well... the play is it's all self contained. No need to host a machine somewhere to run the controller, no need to host a machine somewhere to do VOIP, no need to host a machine somewhere to do access, etc, etc.
but bringing all that in-house - you have to consider the risk factors.
But there is a reason businesses specifically separate those duties. Those are horrible things to mash into your firewall. They are bad to mash anywhere, but on the FIREWALL!!! That's effing insane. If there is one place in your entire network that you never put other workloads, that's the place.
There's no need to host a controller somewhere either, it always ran on a desktop if you were residential. Seriously the DreamMachine is just another inverted pyramid of doom. Easy to make sound good, impossible to find a valid use case for. It's designed to be marketed, not to be desired.

What even makes it look neat? To me, being junk, makes it far less interesting than normal gear. Like you are used to a Ferrari and then someone comes along with this Yugo. Yeah... not interesting, at all. Not even as a gadget, because there's nothing special, just crappier versions of what we already use.

Not even something I would ever use in a home. If a home needs more than a simple combined router, it needs to be treated seriously.
Ubiquiti makes the AmpliFi line for the home sector. If that unit is too limiting, then go with real gear not this.
