Its amazing how many vendors....

Yes and no. For little stuff, I actually like the reviews, like headsets, headphones, individual parts, etc. That being said, I never decide to buy or not buy something based solely off SW reviews. I do my own research, and like you, often start a thread asking for suggestions and/or experiences.

Actually back when I was CM I did catch a bunch of stuff like this - we'd usually delete them. You can report the reviews that you find that are suspicious. There are ones that are semi-legit though, where the vendor asks their happy clients to go post on Spiceworks.
Yeah I figured that might happen. There is no way to be 100% sure.
That's the biggest problem. There is no way to identify between a legit review and a fake one. I've had a lot of vendors get pretty incensed that people (mostly me) thought that accounts were created by them to promote their brand. But some, like Proxmox, really does that all of the time - every pro-proxmox post was made by pimientos and all were either pure promotion or out of context. Not one ever came back and kept posting.

@thanksaj That's literally what we were encouraged to do in a round about way by our SW account manager. (Will I get in trouble for saying that on here?)
That's expected with any vendor and any community. It's normal and AJ is the only person that I've ever heard that felt it was wrong or unexpected. Anyone else I've ever talked to assumes that all vendors are asking their customers to provide reviews. That's how reviews everywhere are done.

Oh, really? Honestly, I'm not surprised. It's a win-win for SW. New members, more content for THEIR site. Well, let me advise you: DO NOT DO IT!
Get them on Spiceworks, have them write a reveiw, and then let them become active in the community. Its not an issue to tell someone to write a review about a genuine product that they feel passionate about. Its an issue when you have pimentos do all your reviews. It just makes everything look fake.
Exactly. If they were encouraging their customers to join, review AND participate in the community, even a little, I'd be thrilled. But when they tell their customers to create an account, do one review, and then they can be done with the site, it's like you said. You get 100 reviews with 98 of them being by someone Anaheim or lower....
No one is doing that. They are just asking for reviews. If people don't see value in the community and don't stay, that isn't the vendor's problem.

Even if 5 out of 10 reviews were by active members....it would mean alot
The issue is not how many reviews are by whom, it is an anonymous review system and worthless. The issue is the review system, not the reviewers and not the vendors. They could make the reviews weighted and only visible when reviewers were active if they wanted. But they don't want.

No, you are normal. The reviews are worthless because of the combination of anonymous reviews and the points associated with the reviews. It really makes the whole system completely valueless.

I did like your review of Chinese Windows though

I'm getting a PDU from Eaton sometime next week, in return for writing a review. Is that wrong?

Nope, also I really like Eaton products and I want a free PDU.
Edit: ML really doesn't like me today.

Too late, it was last week and first 10 people to see the thread got PDU's. I was #2 or #3 I think.

Figures. I'm barely on SW anymore. Mostly I just check for updates to threads I've already posted on. I had something like 16 reviews deleted today...again...

Mostly they are real reviews that are deleted because they are merging entries. I get several each and every day. I have to post like crazy just to keep points at an even number. They waited more than half a decade to start cleaning up the review system which, I feel, is completely inappropriate. We offered to do this as part of the mod duties many years ago and were turned down. Deleting that stuff now really isn't appropriate although sorely needed. It is really way too late, the reviews are worthless. Worse than worthless, they are of negative value.
