Anyone who liked SW prior to the rehashing / rebooting
This is most people though
not really - it's only really fits for people who are 35 or older today. Tons of 20 somethings have never seen a star wars movie at all.
Or maybe just the new ones, because they are "popular" as part of the dress up culture that has arisen.
I'll give you that.
I hasn't considered that - movies now carter to that whole "new" pop culture thing - cosplay. I think Scott agrees that most only do it because it's the current IN thing to do.
Yeah. When I was ~26, cosplay was "nerd culture" and mostly relegated to super hard core fans of a film or genre. It was rare and marked you as unique, and really, really into whatever the topic was.
Today, every 20 something girl does this (and loads of guys) and it is basically like Halloween, just a fun excuse to get as close to naked as possible and show off. Which is great and 100% okay, but a totally backwards concept to being a fan of the media in question.
I have friends who are professional cosplayers, they do it full time, post pics several times a day. And you have to have a "subscription" to see their naughtier material. You literally pay for them to remove the outfits. It a great number of cases, cosplay has become as mainstream as pop culture gets, and has often moved from being "nearly stripping" to literally being paid stripping.
Absolutely. This is no different than the football craze of the 80's - today. It's just the current modern hip thing to do.
In the 1990s, dressing meant you were likely a fan of whatever you dressed up as. Today, not dressing up is probably a better way to convey that.

The only people I know that don't like Star Wars are women and to be fair these specific women don't like anything so who really cares
No he's right, there's a lot of kids (edit Guys) my age ( 21 ~) that havent seen SW nor want to see it!
A lot of the kids my age would rather watch the new ones "because better graphics" , I no longer talk to these people.. I dont need that negativity in my life. That's become a thing. When I was a kid, 50 year old movies were normal to watch. I grew up with movies made in the 30s and 40s and never thought of them as "bad".
Most 20 somethings I talk to today refuse to "watch anything made before I was born", because they have no interest in "old stuff."
When you were a kid, the FX still weren't THAT much better than the 70's.
That's partly what made the movies so good, they had to make good movies for people to bother watching them.
Well, I was going more for - you didn't dislike the older movies because frankly that weren't that much worse quality than the ones of the time.
Today that's simply not the case. Movies today look gorgeous! especially compared to movies of the 70's and older.Look gorgeous, but I struggle to find any worth watching. It is costly to make them look good, so that gets the focus.
Kids today don't care about that - as you already said. So it doesn't matter.
-
I don't find anything really interesting. They seem quite flat.
(Not seen Solo yet) -
You know what though.... The disney star wars movies are so bad they make you appreciate episodes 1-3 a bit more. They still arent great, maybe not even good but definitely not worse than what disney has done.
-
@kelly said in Star Wars - What do you like about the new movies, and what is not so great?:
TFA and TLJ are just terrible, especially in light of the years of content created by the novels and comics that Disney trashed.
This is my beef. There was so much that they had to choose from. Instead they made up new shit from whole cloth.
I get not wanting to "compete" with the original EU in people's heads. That would have always been a problem had they tried to go in close after VI.
But tossing it out there with no story or reason? WTF?
And then the whole Jedi are a myth thing when they met Han in VII? WTF Again?
had there been actual story to create a plot, it would have been a different discussion. Still possibly crap movies, but still.

I've seen all the new ones except for Solo and they are ok. I'm just not a fan of Star Wars. Now if there was a movie based on a game like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, I would definitely be into that.
-
@black3dynamite Have you played SWTOR? It is like a Star Wars movie. You even find out what happens to Malak and Revan.

Yeah, KOTOR was better than any of the movies.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/32370/STAR_WARS__Knights_of_the_Old_Republic/
It goes on sale most of the Steam sales for at least 50% off if not more. It has also been in two Humble Bundles.

GOG has it, too.

We were right into Star Wars books, the original canon Legends, when the new stuff started to come up.
Initially I didn't know that Disney had broken off from the old canon to create an entirely new storyline so there was a lot of confusion as both my daughter and I have read most of the Legends series.
Our favourite character old/new canon is Thrawn. Timothy Zahn is a phenomenal writer and instrumental in setting off the storm of original canon (Legends) based books. The collaboration between the authors of the various series was neat to see. They worked hard to stay loyal to the timelines and technology lines.
As far as the movies go, there's a lot there that needs to be filled in. Some aspects look like pulls from Legends while others are completely off the bend like the method Han received his last name in Solo.
On the To Do list is to pick up the new canon books, especially the Timothy Zahn Thrawn books, and start reading to see where things are coming from.
As far as Rei goes, her Force powers are mythical in nature. That's one thing the new canon follows with the old: There's always to be a balance in the Force between Light and Dark. Thus, her Force senses and abilities are easily on par with Kylo Ren and with development easily with Snoke.
I thoroughly enjoyed Rogue One and Solo though I was disappointed with the naming scene. Solo's cousin is one nasty dude in Legends. I also enjoyed both mainstream movies. The kids and I have watched all six original movies many, many, many times, and same with the new ones.
So long as the new canon book authors and the movie makers work hard to keep things together, like the iron hold Lucas had on the original canon for the first ten or more years, we should see much of the backstory developed in book form which in turn will help future movies as right now they are essentially writing the story on the fly.
Oh, and there are a lot of YouTube backstory type videos on the movies that can really help. We have spent a good chunk of time digging into them. The Fandom WookiePedia on the new Canon is also quite helpful.

@kelly @scottalanmiller That is KOTOR. SWTOR is the mmo which is sort of a sequel to Kotor1 and Kotor 2.
It has a bunch of other stuff but it has resolution to KOTORs that you didnt get. -

I really wanted to enjoy SWTOR but couldn't really get into it. It also came out just as I was getting out of college so probably didn't have time to dedicate to it.
