I am in the market for a wildcard SSL. I am looking at some websites that say I can get them for 40-60 dollars a year where others are anywhere from 200-400 a year. Is there something I should be aware of?

      ssl2buy.com - cheap
      digicert.com - expensive

Not really, cheap is better. Expensive ones are mostly to play to the emotional mistakes made by non-technical managers who are confused about value and think that more money means better product. It's a common way to prey on consumers who have no idea how to differentiate products. So as long as you have a legitimate cert vendor, go for cheap.

Also, consider if you really need a wildcard. Now that normal certs are free, the need for wildcards is greatly diminished.

Wildcards are now free from one of the, if not THE, top certificate authority, LetsEncrypt.

I have one of these, and it works great! I'm not due up for renewal for another month or so, so I can't speak to the renewal process.

Holy crap.. This is awesome. Thank you so much. Only thing that suck is the 90 day reissue, but who cares! Its free!

I think that the Certificate renewal process can be automated for the Wildcart cert, but I haven't had to renew mine yet.

It's expected that you'd automate renewal some way. I don't think I can use the wildcard certs with Cloudflare yet, would be much nicer than the ever growing list of subdomains being run on my home lab box.

It doesn't suck at all. I have been using Let's Encrypt on my VPS and Blog for a while now and haven't had to do or look at a single thing regarding SSL certs since I've set it up. Not only that, it was super simple to set up.

It's one of those things you can "set it and forget it", literally. With regular SSL providers, you'll have to manually renew and update the SSL cert every year or two. With Let's Encrypt, you never have to do a damn thing, ever... after you take a minute to set it up. It's clearly way easier and less manual than using a paid CA.

Cloudflare has multi year free certs if you're concerned about that.
