This is another veterinary client with an issue. Their issue seems to be more network related and I'm trying to track down what is going on.
If the server is not busy, then the network in that situation should be idle. What kind of switch are they on?

@scottalanmiller Dell PowerConnect 2748 and they have swapped it out. Also swapped NIC in server.

That's a smart switch. Is it report errors, a really busy port, or anything like that? It doesn't have a lot of data, but it does have some.

What do desktops to desktops, or server to router, or desktops to router reporting? This should help you determine if the issue is desktop side, server side, or switch.

That is an old switch by today's standard (I have had them) and many fail with that type of ping. I would recommend replacing it regardless, it might not be the issue but in our case we had to increase jumbo frames and adjust STP on the network.
I have loved Dell Switches but the PowerConnect 28x and 27x had that issue at times where you could get random response of pings and the network is as idle as it can get.

Could be that the either system (source or target) is doing something CPU intensive at that moment. Like if you are booting it up or something. If you are consitently getting that, try pinging to another system on the same switch, swapping a cable, running to a different wall port and switch port, then switch, etc.

Man it might be better than the ones they had for sure. Can you test the ping directly to the edge router? Or to the Servers Specifically? All that bypassing the switch.

That's their main switch. No other switches to bypass.

The point was ping something besides the server.
The server has all kinds of reason to provide bad responses.
If nothing else pings with odd response times, it means it is the server.
