I use Rocket, but not Slack.

Does rocket chat has public community options?

I don't think so. How do you want to use it?

I haven't personally had an interest in Slack, so I've done zero research into it.

That said - I thought Slack was expensive?

Do they have a free for non business account?

          Edit - so they do

@Dashrender slack has always had a free option. But channels made with free have some crappy restrictions if you want to run it long term.

OIC - again, never had a reason to look at it personally.

Not on Slack but there are several great one using https://gitter.im, most communities are for developers but I think you might like more than one using this tag:

                Devops - https://gitter.im/explore/tags/curated:devops,devops

                • Ansible - https://gitter.im/ansible/ansible?source=explore
                • Docker - https://gitter.im/docker/docker?source=explore

Seems a bit like an IRC channel.

Yep, pretty much what public slack and gitter communities are replacing.

IRC is all but dead, has been going that way for a long time. Just a lot of old timers hanging on to it.

Until you mentioned it, I still thought that it was.

It is a huge community, but my personal experience show that less people are coming in than leaving because of tools like slack.
