Turkish airlines really tempting, but worried about the issues they had recent attacks! 😞

Ataturk is probably the safest airport in the world. It's the only one that had attacks that they were able to repel them. Their security was so good that the bombers didn't even make it into the airport. There is no airport in the US that comes close to the security there. Five checkpoints before the plane, including metal detectors before you enter the airport itself. You chose Turkish because of security, not in spite of it.

@Ambarishrh Better to be safe man. It's tough, but you'd lose a lot more time in your life if you're dead.

That's actually a reason that I prefer that airport. It doesn't just appear safe, it's the only one that had a terrorist attack that failed.

Due to the competency of the airport or the incompetency of the terrorists?

Given the @scottalanmiller has travelled number of times through this airport, i am leaning towards this. Read some more info and most of that says high alert in areas near Syria

And the chances of someone trying again are low, because it is already been hit, and because it was hit and failed and because it is so high profile that the security around it is crazy. Tanks always at hand!

I'd listen to Scott. He's travelled a hell of a lot more than I have, that's for sure.

Competency of the airport. One of the few that has security to approach the airport. They caught the bombers trying to get to the airport on the outside. Same security that the US has halfway through the airport. I thought that Mexico City was secure, but Ataturk puts it to shame. I prefer Ataturk for my family specifically because of safety.

So your advice would be to proceed? Its actually way cheaper! If i compare it with Emirates airlines/Qatar Turkish airlines is really cheap, and i guess i heard good things about the flight from your previous posts too!

Emirates might be more luxurious, but for me, Turkish is pretty posh for cheap seats. I love it. You can ask my five year old, she demands that we fly Turkish whenever we can 🙂 It's the only airlines that my kids ask for by name.

It's annoying when you are there. Think US airport security.... five different times to get to your plane! But, boy is it secure. It's the world's hub. Nearly every country is represented there. It's like the UN of travel. So they have to be secure. But it is worth it when you are using it as your global transit hub, you want security over speed.

Then even have security where families have to be separated. Not far away, but you can't be together. Kids pick a parent and the men go to one line and the women to another. They do 100% metal detector, 100% full scan, 100% pat down, 100% chemical test.... none of this random scans or pulling people out of line. Every person, every bag goes through everything.

Has anyone made the drive from Toronto to Rochester? I'm probably flying to Toronto for a couple of days before MC17, and will probably rent a car and drive around the lake (~3 hours).

It's a really simple drive, but I don't know what kind of toll roads you'll hit on your way down.

Then even have security where families have to be separated. Not far away, but you can't be together. Kids pick a parent and the men go to one line and the women to another. They do 100% metal detector, 100% full scan, 100% pat down, 100% chemical test.... none of this random scans or pulling people out of line. Every person, every bag goes through everything.

how early do you need to arrive to get through all of that?

Well, the rule of thumb is always three hours. Few people "arrive" though, it's an airport to transit through. You land and take off without leaving the airport, normally. So not really an issue for the majority of travelers unless Istanbul is your destination.

I am getting it, read other places too, looks like its ok! 🙂

around 7hours wait time for next flight, hope the airport is good enough to stay longer

Loads of food and tons of crowds. Easy to find people to talk to there. And if you have little kids, people will keep feeding them.

So even people who are just passing through have to go through those 5 levels of checks? or only those coming in from outside the airport, or those who leave the secure zones?
